Sybase Chosen as Official Software Supplier of the 1998 World Cup

Client/Server Software to Run World's Largest Mass-Media Sporting Event
with a Cumulative Worldwide TV Audience of More Than 37 Billion

EMERYVILLE, CA, JANUARY 22, 1996 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that its software products have
been selected by the 1998 World Cup Organizing Committee, the Comite
Francais d'Organisation de la Coupe du Monde, as the Official Software of
the 1998 World Cup. Sybase software, which was also showcased in the 1994
World Cup, will be integrated into almost every aspect of managing the
event and will be a key component of an information system encompassing
more than one hundred local area networks linked together by a single wide
area network.

Sybase software was a key component of the 1994 World Cup Information
Technology System based in the United States, at the time the largest
global deployment of client/server technology supporting a true "virtual
enterprise."

"The World Cups stated objective for 1998 is to leverage and go beyond the
success of the system built for World Cup 1994, which was truly
trend-setting technology," said Dave Peterschmidt, executive vice
president and chief operating officer for Sybase. "For the new system,
supporting the largest sporting event ever, we'll help build the next
generation of client/server architectures, one that is truly
network-centric and technically elegant. Sybase is a world-class company,
and the 1998 World Cup's selection of our technology highlights our
leadership in providing the enterprise-wide client/server solutions."

"Sybase is clearly the right software choice for the 1998 World Cup," said
Philippe Verveer - Director of information technology for the 1998 World
Cup.

"The World Cup Organizing Committee recognized the superior performance and
functionality that Sybase products can offer in bringing together an
enterprise client/server infrastructure, global connectivity/access and
multimedia capabilities. The commitment and motivation of the Sybase team
-- and the experience of Sybase in the World Cup USA 1994 --were further
motivations in selecting Sybase technology."

The 1998 World Cup Information Technology Network

Sybase products will be used to build and run the information system that
will manage the soccer matches and supporting operations in over ten
locations throughout France. Cities hosting games and events include
Bordeaux, Lens, Lyon, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Paris, St. Denis,
St. Etienne and Toulouse. Sybase software will link together the
headquarters of the Organizing Committee, the International Broadcast
Centre, the Main Press Center in or close to Paris, and each organizing
city, including CFO offices, the stadium, the hospitality village, the
press center, the accreditation center, the FIFA-selected hotel and press
hotels. FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association), based in
Zurich, Switzerland, is the governing body of the World Cup.

The system will consist of a wide-area network of Sybase SQL Server
databases, and applications developed using Powersoft) development tools
running on over 1,800 client workstations. It is anticipated that 2.5
million attendees and more than 9,000 journalists will access this system
both in France and around the world.

Some Specific Applications

The 1998 World Cup information system will consist of several components
including applications designed to track and manage the registration of
over 1,200 of the worlds best athletes and officials; manage accreditation
and badging of over 50,000 participants, as well as manage logistics and
security; and support multimedia workstations that provide attendees,
journalists and participants with historical game information, player/team
profiles, game-by-game statistics, standings and results.

"The 1998 World Cup organization wants a sophisticated, easy- to-access,
graphical way of presenting information to the thousands of press and
officials covering the games, as well as the billions of people watching
them. We also need to effectively capture video images of participants to
print on the badges and store in the database," said Verveer, "Sybase
software provides the features we need to build, run and support these
applications."

Applications using Sybase software will allow the accreditation system to
input video imaging along with identification information (name, country,
passport number, etc.) for the 50,000 registered participants of the 1998
World Cup. The accreditation system will use the video images to create
photo-ID badges and the security system will use the data to provide order
and access control to the World Cup Games and to track any accredited
people.

The logistics application will track a range of functions, including
ticketing, accommodations, medical services, media booking,
transportation, personnel deployment, economic information, project
planning and control, computer aided design to manage maps of venues,
procurement and materials management, volunteers and other personnel.

Sybase products used by the 1998 World Cup

The 1998 World Cup will have access to the broad range of Sybases products
including SQL Server 11, Replication Server, and Powerbuilder. More
details on Sybase products -- and how they will be used in the 1998 World
