Spyglass Releases Open Web Server SDK

Offers Free, Standalone Web Server; 3-10 Times Faster Than Competition

Naperville, Ill. -- Tuesday, January 16, 1996 -- Spyglass Inc. (NASDAQ:
SPYG) unveiled today its new Spyglass Server Software Development Kit
(SDK) aimed at companies offering World-Wide Web-enabled applications and
services. As part of the announcement, the company released comprehensive
performance benchmark tests of leading commercial and public domain Web
servers that show Spyglass' open server technology is 3-10 times faster
than competitive offerings.

Today in a conference call with the news media and industry analysts, Marc
Miller, Spyglass executive vice president of marketing will outline the
company's plans to help meet the growing market need for faster Web server
technology. "It's pretty simple", said Miller. "Recent Internet and
Intranet growth requires that existing Web server technology become faster
to alleviate bottlenecks due to dramatically increased amounts of
information and traffic on the Web. In addition, software applications and
corporate services need to incorporate truly open Web server technology so
users can access information directly on the Internet and Intranet."

The company released a free, standalone Web server which was developed
using the Spyglass Server SDK. "We want to show application and service
providers the market-leading performance of our server technology and how
simple it is to incorporate into their products or services", said Miller.
"By offering a free standalone Web Server which is 3-10 times faster than
the competition, we are also continuing our efforts to develop the overall
market for additional Web applications and services."

In addition to the high-performance HTTP engine, the Spyglass Server SDK
includes:

* A high-performance API, known as the Application Development
  Interface (ADI), which offers a faster, more efficient alternative
  to CGI.
* The Spyglass Modular Security Framework, an API which allows
  customized security systems to be added to the server.
* The User Interface Programming Interface (UIPI) for creating custom
  user interfaces.
* Support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) bulk encryption.
* Complete documentation.
* Sample ADI applications.
* Source libraries.

Spyglass Server technology is already being deployed in many products and
services familiar to consumers today. Oracle Corporation is offering a
tightly coupled Web server based on Spyglass technology with its market
leading database server offerings.

In a related announcement today, TriTeal Corp. said it would offer a fully
supported version of the standalone Spyglass Server for $199. TriTeal also
announced it has signed a multi-million dollar licensing deal with
Spyglass. TriTeal will be tightly integrating both Spyglass' client and
server technology in its TriTeal Enterprise Desktop (TED), which is the
only X/Open branded multiplatform implementation of the Common Desktop
Environment (CDE) which serves the exploding Intranet marketplace.

The Spyglass Server SDK starts at $75,000 including run time licenses and
support. Platforms supported today are UNIX, WindowsNT and Win 95. The
free standalone server can be downloaded at www.spyglass.com.
