PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY ADDS NETWORK TRANSACTION MANAGEMENT TO ITS SYSTEMS
MANAGEMENT OFFERINGS;

ACQUISITION OF ADVANCED SYSTEM TECHNOLOGIES, INC. PRODUCTS MAKES PLATINUM
THE ONLY VENDOR OFFERING TRUE MEASUREMENT OF END-USER RESPONSE TIMES FOR
CLIENT/SERVER TRANSACTIONS

OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL, JANUARY 23, 1996 . . . PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY, INC.,
today announced the addition of client/sever transaction management tools
to its line of performance management products. The newly acquired tools,
which will be released by PLATINUM as WireTap, provide network
service-level transaction monitoring and performance management for
client/server applications in distributed UNIX environments.

On January 17, 1996, PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY added the WireTap products to its
performance management line by acquiring Advanced System Technologies,
Inc./Distributed Computing Group (AST/DCG), a privately-held company based
in Englewood, Colorado. AST/DCG became a wholly-owned subsidiary of
PLATINUM technology. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The
addition of the AST/DCG transaction monitoring/management software is a
key component of the PLATINUM Open Enterprise Management System (POEMS)
strategy, PLATINUM's plan to provide complete, integrated operations and
systems management solutions for the Open Enterprise Environment (OEE).

"Transaction service-level management tools are what the IT user community
really wants, and needs, to ensure the efficient operation, integrity, and
reliability of networked systems. AST/DCG is a leading provider of these
tools," said Andrew Filipowski, president and CEO of PLATINUM technology,
inc. "By analyzing the response time of client/server application
transactions at the network level, the AST/DCG products enable system
administrators to manage performance problems before they filter down to
subordinate levels, including servers and databases. They also allow IT
management to accurately forecast performance. Effective performance
management results in potentially huge savings in staff time and
processing costs."

"With the acquisition of the AST/DCG products, PLATINUM is now the only
systems management vendor offering a solution that truly measures end-user
response time for client/server transactions," said Filipowski.

"We look forward to joining PLATINUM and integrating with POEMS, and
PLATINUM's systems management and data management solutions," said James
Rosborough, development laboratory manager at AST/DCG. "Our companies
share philosophies about spending the maximum amount of time possible with
customers to ensure that products are developed to meet customers'
changing needs. Also, with the additional development, marketing and sales
resources PLATINUM provides, we will be able to give our customers more
powerful tools, faster than we could before."

WIRETAP AND PLATINUM'S PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT SUITE

PLATINUM WireTap will be composed of two products: Xtn::Characterizer and
Xtn::Monitor. Xtn::Characterizer profiles client/server applications: it
analyzes the significant transactions associated with a given application,
and records how much network, server, and database resources each
transaction uses. For transactions calibrated by Xtn::Characterizer,
Xtn::Monitor will measure the ongoing volume and response time performance
of the significant transactions within the application (for example, order
entry transactions in a retail system). System administrators can use this
data to identify when transaction response times are greater than normal,
and take corrective actions. By monitoring the application's workload and
performance, Xtn::Monitor supplies the necessary information that is
crucial to service-level reporting and the capacity planning process.

The WireTap product line is a significant addition to PLATINUM's suite of
enterprise-strength performance management products. This suite also
includes DBVision, which manages performance of UNIX-based relational
database systems, and ServerVision, which manages UNIX server performance.
"WireTap brings the network into the PLATINUM performance management
suite," said Mark Fetherolf, vice president of PLATINUM's Aston Brooke
lab, which develops DBVision and ServerVision. "PLATINUM now offers a
truly comprehensive enterprise performance management solution, from the
database level to the network."

PLATINUM SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

The acquisition of AST/DCG is an integral component of PLATINUM's systems
management strategy. Systems management ties together critical management
functions of both MVS and "open" client/server systems. PLATINUM will help
information systems executives manage their open enterprise environments
by linking data management, network management, job management, database
administration, storage management, security, performance management, help
desk, and transaction management functions.
