PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY'S FIRST TOOL FOR SYBASE, MICROSOFT
SQL SERVER BACKUP ANALYSIS; PLATINUM IMAGE ANALYZER HELPS ENSURE BACKUP
INTEGRITY, SPEEDS DATA RECOVERY, PROVIDES AUDIT OF DATABASE MODIFICATIONS

OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL, JANUARY 16, 1996. . . PLATINUM TECHNOLOGY, INC.,
today announced PLATINUM Image Analyzer for SQL Server, the industry's
first backup analysis tool for Sybase and Microsoft SQL Server. With Image
Analyzer, database administrators (DBAs) can examine the contents of a
backup to ensure its integrity, quickly recover data from tables that have
been lost or corrupted, and audit data modifications.

"Before Image Analyzer, SQL Server users have had no way to verify that
their backups are valid and readable, which can create a lot of problems
when data must be recovered," said Scott Kane, senior vice president of
database management for PLATINUM. "The only option to help ensure backup
integrity has been to run Sybase's and Microsoft's Database Consistency
Checker (DBCC) immediately prior to a backup. DBCC, however, is
time-consuming and processing-intensive, which often prevents its usage
anyway."

Image Analyzer speeds and simplifies database backup and recovery by
providing two key features not available with SQL Server:

off-line verification of backup integrity, virtually eliminating
any impact on normal processing; and
the ability to recover data from individual tables, rather than
 requiring an entire database recovery.

HOW IMAGE ANALYZER WORKS

Each backup of a database provides a snapshot image of that database at a
particular time. Image Analyzer is the first tool that allows DBAs to view
this snapshot image, including table data pages and transaction log pages.
It bypasses the normal SQL access methods to read these pages directly and
presents the information in an easy- to-read format. With Image Analyzer,
users can:

 quickly check database integrity without tying up system resources;

 browse archived backups to recover data from individual tables;

regenerate Data Manipulation Language (DML) statements from the
transaction log to reverse erroneous delete, insert, and update
 statements; and

create an audit report from the archived files to maintain a record
 of data modifications.

PLATINUM'S STRATEGY AND INTEGRATION PLANS

Image Analyzer is part of PLATINUM's product strategy to bring best-
of-breed data and systems management to the open enterprise environment
(OEE) -- the networked, heterogeneous computing environment that includes
MVS-, UNIX-, and Windows-based platforms and may contain MVS, AS/400, and
OS/2 systems. For backup analysis in DB2 for MVS environments, PLATINUM
offers PLATINUM Log Analyzer.

AVAILABILITY, PLATFORM SUPPORT AND PRICING

Image Analyzer is scheduled to be available in January 1996. It supports
Microsoft SQL Server 6.0 or Sybase SQL Server 4.2 through System 10. The
software can run on PC and UNIX platforms. The PC version is compatible
with Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows NT, and OS/2 V2.1 or above. The UNIX
