ON Technology Corporation Adds Local Workstation Metering With Add-ons For
Popular SofTrack Application

CAMBRIDGE, Mass, Jan. 26, 1996 -- ON Technology Corporation (Nasdaq: ONTC)
announced today a new software application that complements the company's
industry-leading SofTrack license metering package by extending metering
and reporting functionality to all Windows applications loaded on
workstation hard drives.

SofTrack was originally designed to meter usage of network-based
applications, allowing network administrators to centrally manage software
license metering, ensure compliance with vendor copyright ownership, and
enjoy the benefits of concurrent licensing when buying upgrades and new
applications. While many network administrators now prefer to have
applications load from the network server, certain end-users require
locally based applications -- a situation previously unmet by SofTrack.

The new add-on module, SofTrack Workstation Metering, is a Windows
application that runs in the background on users' workstations and
complements the SofTrack 2.7 NetWare Loadable Module (NLM) that resides on
the NetWare server. Current users of SofTrack 2.7 need only buy the
SofTrack Workstation Metering module to gain the new capability; users of
an earlier version of SofTrack will need to upgrade to SofTrack 2.7 first.
New customers may take advantage of a special program that allows them to
purchase SofTrack 2.7 and the SofTrack Workstation Metering module at a
combined, discounted price.

"SofTrack and its Workstation Metering module can now effectively guarantee
organizations the ability to track Windows applications no matter where
they're installed," said John Rizzi, vice president of sales, ON
Technology. "Workstation metering meets a request we have received from
numerous SofTrack customers who have the need to run some applications
from their hard drive and need a metering solution that allows them to
maintain compliance with the licensing agreements on their applications,"
said Rizzi.

In addition to metering application usage, SofTrack Workstation Metering
can also be used to block, track or restrict usage of any non-work related
applications, such as games, online services and web browsers. For
example, a license profile for the popular game Doom could be established
in order to monitor any daytime use of the popular game. A report could be
easily produced to show usage by person for any of these applications.
Another option would be to use the SofTrack Time Restriction feature to
prevent use of any entertainment software during business hours.

LOCAL LICENSE METERING WITHOUT A TSR OR STUB FILE

While the SofTrack Workstation Metering application is actually installed
by the network administrator on the server, the program installs itself on
each local workstation without requiring the administrator to visit each
workstation during installation. The one other installation procedure for
network administrators is to create a license profile for each Windows
application that a user may run from a workstation. The network
administrator need only specify the executable filename for each local
Windows application. Both server- and local-based licenses can be pooled
under one license profile or separate under two.

As users launch a locally based Windows application, the SofTrack
Workstation Metering module notifies the SofTrack NLM on the server, which
in turn records the local application usage for subsequent reports and
license compliance enforcement.

Unlike metering products that use a TSR or stub file to perform local
application metering, the SofTrack Workstation Metering application that
resides on each workstation is tamper-proof, preventing clever users from
bypassing local metering.

Indeed, each time a workstation logs onto the network, SofTrack verifies
that the SofTrack Workstation Metering application is operational. If for
some reason the local application isn't operational at login, SofTrack
immediately notifies the network administrator of the discrepancy.

The new SofTrack Workstation Metering application is designed to allow
NetWare administrators to save money by taking advantage of special
licensing agreements that extend concurrent licensing to include
applications installed on local hard drives. For example, one major
software vendor, Microsoft, offers this option under its Maintenance Plus
and Select 3.0 licensing program as long as the network administrator has
a reasonable metering solution, such as SofTrack.
