MICROSOFT EXCHANGE SERVER MTA RECEIVES 1988 X.400 CERTIFICATION; ENSURES
INTEROPERABILITY FOR CUSTOMERS

REDMOND, WASH. - JAN. 16, 1996 - Microsoft Corp. today announced it has
received certification by US Gosip for the Microsoft Exchange Server
Message Transfer Agent (MTA) for the 1988 X.400 specification. This
certification helps ensure that customers' messaging systems interoperate
with other X.400 systems. Microsoft's MTA is only the second MTA to
receive this certification.

The Microsoft Exchange Server MTA has also been certified as complying with
the US Gosip 1984 X.400 standards, which makes Microsoft the first vendor
to certify a particular product for both 1984 and 1988 X.400 standards.
Using X.25, TCP/IP and TP4, Microsoft Exchange Server adheres to the
specifications of X.400, which help give customers a high degree of
confidence that their systems will interoperate with other X.400 systems,
both private and commercial. This certification also reinforces
Microsoft's commitment to ensuring that Microsoft Exchange Server supports
industry specifications.

In addition to being certified for both the 1988 and 1984 X.400 standards,
Microsoft Exchange is also designed to support the Internet. Microsoft
Exchange client architecture allows users to connect to Point of
Preference (POP) and Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) servers
directly, using the Internet Mail Services component in Microsoft Plus!
for WindowsR 95. Microsoft Exchange Internet Mail Connector provides
Internet connectivity for an entire Microsoft Exchange Server- based
organization and also supports MIME and UUENCODE, the two most popular
specifications for handling rich data over the Internet. Microsoft
Exchange makes it possible to connect a Microsoft Exchange client to a
Microsoft Exchange Server over the Internet, treating the Internet just
like a wide-area network. In addition to offering these technologies,
which are shipping in the Microsoft Exchange Server release candidate
today, Microsoft will in its next wave of products make it possible for a
World Wide Web browser to access Microsoft Exchange Server applications
and will allow users of Microsoft Exchange to take part in Internet
newsgroup discussions.
