CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Jan. 3, 1996 -- Lotus Development Corp. today announced
that on Dec. 29 it released to manufacturing Lotus Notes Release 4, a
major new version of the world's leading messaging and groupware product.

"Last week's release to manufacturing begins the process of delivering this
exciting new version of Notes," said Jeff Papows, Lotus executive vice
president and chief operating officer. "With Release 4, Notes leads the
industry with a unified platform for enterprise client/server messaging,
custom business applications, and unmatched Internet integration. Users

the premier distributed authoring and deployment platform for strategic
business process applications."

Lotus will showcase Notes Release 4 at Lotusphere '96, to be held January
22-25 in Orlando, Fla.

Among the thousands of customers already planning to install Notes Release

Lotus Notes site, with more than 100,000 licenses installed.

According to Don Hedeen, Director of Information Delivery and Deployment
for GM, "Our extensive use of Lotus Notes on all major computing platforms
spans GM operations in over 50 countries and enables communications with
many GM dealers and suppliers worldwide. We're especially excited about
Notes Release 4's sophisticated replication features, which will allow our
mobile users to synchronize all their Notes databases with a single phone
call."

Introduced in 1989, Lotus Notes has become the world's leading messaging
and groupware software. It has attained its leadership status by providing
a complete platform for developing and deploying messaging and groupware

databases and by the support of more than 12,000 Lotus Business Partners,
who offer hundreds of off-the-shelf applications, custom development,
deployment and maintenance services.

With Notes Release 4, Lotus is providing product improvements in six key
areas: client/server messaging; ease of use; Internet integration;
mobility; application development and programmability; and enterprise
management and scaleability.

can make use of Notes' powerful application development, security,
replication, mobile access, and messaging features.

The Notes Release 4 server is available in single- and multi-processor
