FREE SPICE Newsletter Discusses Simulating State Machines

The Intusoft Newsletter is a unique FREE publication dedicated to
discussing topics related to the SPICE circuit simulation program. The
current issue contains several application notes designed to help
engineers simulate circuits more effectively.

The main article describes a new State Machine model for use with the SPICE
3 circuit simulation program. It is the first time that a such a
capability has been incorporated into SPICE 3F5, the latest version. The
model greatly enhances the mixed mode simulation capability of SPICE,
which has traditionally been used as an analog only

simulator.

The state machine provides for straight forward descriptions of logic
blocks with a variable number of inputs and outputs and an unlimited
number of states. The model can be configured to behave as virtually any
type of counter or clocked combinational logic. It can replace very large
sections of digital circuits with an identical functionality but faster
execution. The state machine SPICE model is built with a public domain
AHDL modeling language which is based on the C programming language. This
"C Code Modeling" architecture is derived from the XSPICE program
originally developed by the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta,
GA. The article describes how to simulate counters with the state machine
and gives an example of a Sine waveform generating ROM.

The Intusoft Modeling Corner, a regular column in the newsletter, also
reports on one of the most complex stimulus I sources developed to date; a
National Television System Committee (NTSC) signal generator. The NTSC
subcircuit topology is discussed in the newsletter and simulation results
are provided.

The Intusoft Newsletter is the only regularly scheduled publication
dedicated to SPICE modeling and analog circuit simulation. An electronic
version (Replica document) of the Intusoft Newsletter is posted on the
Intusoft Web site and Compuserve (CADD/CAM/CAE Vendor Forum). The peak
newsletter circulation is currently at 34,000 readers in over 1 10
countries.
