IBM Expands Customer Value of Lotus Notes Over Networks

ORLANDO, FL, January 22, 1996 . . . IBM today announced the results of
successful pilots of the IBM Global Network service for Lotus Notes* as
well as a program to expand the customer value of Lotus Notes over
networks.

The pilots of the IBM Global Network service for Lotus Notes involve
Sikorsky Aircraft Worldwide Customer Service (WCS), IVANS, Inc. and Ogilvy
& Mather.

IBM will be providing a solutions-oriented program to help customers of all
sizes better utilize Lotus Notes. The Notes Service Solution Program was
developed to enhance the value of public Notes services offered by
telecommunications carriers, network service providers and the IBM Global
Network.

"The value of this program is that IBM will be able to respond quickly to
customer needs with complete solutions that leverage the experience of
leading Notes service providers," said Steve Weyl, vice president, network
services integration, IBM Global Network. "The combination of Notes, the
World Wide Web and the Internet provides a powerful, world class
environment for building dynamic client/server applications."

Customer Benefits Realized

Sikorsky Aircraft WCS needed to re-engineer the paper-intensive
communication process between customers and support personnel, while also
providing online data access for customer service and support. "Using
Notes on a global network will help us to integrate our vast information
resources into a one-stop, easy-to-use, online tool. Outdated information
is avoided and customers benefit from increased responsiveness," said W.
Ochsner, director, marketing and customer support systems, Sikorsky
Aircraft Worldwide Customer Service.

IVANS, Inc., represents the special communications needs and interests of
information processing concerns of insurance companies and independent
agents. "The power of the IBM Global Network service for Lotus Notes
enables us and our customers to collaborate on critical applications as
well as communicate more effectively," said Rita Waters, senior vice
president, IVANS.

In the business of marketing communications, worldwide advertising giant
Ogilvy & Mather, which operates from 272 offices in 64 countries, uses
Notes to facilitate several processes within its production and logistics
environment. IBM provided extensive deployment, installation and support
capabilities required to expand and maintain a global collaborative
environment. "Our business is dependent upon being able to interpret the
rapidly changing and converging media, telecommunications, entertainment
and computer industries," said Paul Cuccia, chief information officer,
Ogilvy & Mather. "The global management and installation services provided
by the IBM Global Network service for Lotus Notes helped us coordinate
efforts and become a more cohesive, consistent and responsive
organization."

Based on the success of the pilots discussed today, the turnkey service is
expected to be generally available in the second quarter this year.

Notes Service Solution Program

The Notes Service Solution Program will offer a rich collection of IBM
applications and consulting services to help customers take full advantage
of Notes services offered on public networks. IBM will provide
interoperability standards and technologies to ensure that an application
can seamlessly work across a variety of services. The Notes Service
Solution Program will be focused in the IBM Network Solutions Centers,
which have a charter to provide customers with IBM application services on
any network where they are needed.

Joining IBM as the first partners in the Notes Service Solution Program are
CompuServe* and Technology Investments, Inc. CompuServe, with its wealth
of experience serving individual customers, and Technology Investments,
with innovative technology solutions supporting concurrent replication of
high data volume, provide increased breadth to the service the partnership
can now offer customers.

The agreement IBM signed with CompuServe will enable IBM to utilize
specific CompuServe Notes service components in the delivery of the IBM
Global Network service for Lotus Notes. The partnership will leverage the
strengths of both IBM and CompuServe which include global management,
installation services and global network connectivity.

"We're excited to be working with IBM in extending and expanding the
capability of their service for Lotus Notes," said Patrick Kloepfer,
manager, Enterprise Service for Lotus Notes, CompuServe. "We believe this
partnership will play an important role in achieving Lotus' goal of
reaching a significant portion of the remotely connected Notes users in
the marketplace."

IBM also entered into a business partner agreement with Technology
Investments, Inc. (TI), to enhance the process associated with large-scale
Notes database replication. TI's Adaptive Replication Engine (ARE*)
technology uses IBM MQSeries* messaging middleware to enable data
replication to multiple Notes servers at once.

ARE enables businesses to rapidly and concurrently replicate data to
numerous recipient servers in a "fan out method" over local, private or
value-added networks, independent of the amount of the data to be
replicated. Business partners, satellite offices or branches of worldwide
organizations can access, interpret and respond real time to the same data
as the originating site. Businesses can reduce discrepancies and eliminate
out-dated information efficiently and productively.

"The implementation of ARE within the IBM Global Network service for Lotus
Notes will provide users with unparalleled performance, scalability and
reliability of the replication process," said Paul Roth, partner,
Technology Investments. "As companies seek to share information within and
outside the organization, IBM's worldwide network infrastructure will
provide connections and manage processes associated with synchronizing
information between all servers."

These are two of several partnerships we are considering to enhance and
broaden the public Notes network environment," said Jim Lidestri, manager
Notes service delivery, IBM. "CompuServe brings expertise in delivering
Notes-based content and mail services to the individual subscriber while
Technology Investments' high volume data replication will provide
significant benefits to our customers."
