Advanced Search Capabilities, More Content Providers, and Other
Enhancements Announced for the IBM infoMarket Service

Falls Church, VA, Jan. 19, 1996 -- IBM today announced a series of
enhancements for its infoMarket service, located at
http://www.infomkt.ibm.com, which significantly improve access to the
information users need and provide more sophisticated search capabilities.
The infoMarket service is a network-centric computing solution from IBM
which enables Internet users to search and retrieve information from a
wide variety of sources.

IBM also announced that it has established relationships with important new
content providers, making an even wider range of information sources
available to users. Taken together, these announcements expand upon
infoMarket's powerful "meta-search" capabilities, which allow users to
simultaneously search, locate and retrieve information from diverse,
popular Web sources as well as from previously unavailable commercial
databases.

With these announcements the IBM infoMarket service now includes:

   * Content excerpts which allow users to preview a sample of
     content before retrieving it;
   * Advanced sea

New Content Providers

Additionally, popular content providers have announced that they have
agreed to provide their content on the IBM infoMarket service. These
companies include:

   * Business Research Services**, a directory of minority
     businesses;
   * Engineering

They join previously announced providers including Hoover's Company
Profiles**, a product of The Reference Press**; Comtex** and Newsbytes**
which are already available on the service.

"The IBM infoMarket service is committed to becoming the primary vehicle on
the Internet for searching, viewing, and buying valuable information,"
said Jeff Crigler, vice president and managing director, IBM infoMarket.
"The enhancements to our search tools and the valuable, commercial content
available on our service are just a few of the new things we are
implementing for the infoMarket service."

Today's announcement is another example of how IBM has asserted its
network-centric computing strategy -- IBM's blueprint to enable users to
receive, use and share applications and services across worldwide voice
and data networks.

Excerpts Allow Users a Sneak Preview

IBM today announced the availability of excerpts, extractions of the first
250 characters of searchable content. These excerpts will save end-users
time in their information retrieval by providing the first few lines of
the text, offering a preview of the selection.

In the future, content delivered via infoMarket will be protected by
Cryptolope* containers, an IBM technology that will enable owners of
copyrighted information to securely distribute their works and receive
payment for their use over the Internet.

Improved Navigation and Handling of Search Results

IBM also announced new infoMarket page designs which improve the
readability of search results and enable easier access to the Web site.

Users can now choose to have results lists sorted by the data source and
then ranked by relevance, or sorted by a relevancy-ranked list of the
results from all sources simultaneously. Users can also choose to have
search results partitioned into sequential sets of 10 or 25 results. The
results page will return the first set of responses to the user's desktop.
By clicking the "next" button, users will retrieve the next list of titles
in the set. In addition, search results can now be stored in bookmarks or
quicklists.

The new infoMarket page designs provide support for Web browsers that
utilize enhanced graphics and also include pages for those browsers that
require lower resolutions or no graphics.
