IBM's ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager Software to Provide Online
Incremental Data Backup for Lotus Notes Release 4

SAN JOSE, Calif. Jan. 17, 1996 . . . Users of Lotus Notes, the world's
leading messaging and groupware product, now get automatic, transparent
protection of their most important business asset -- information. IBM
today announced that ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager (ADSM) will
support online, incremental backup of Lotus Notes Release 4 database
documents.

"ADSM allows information systems managers to backup, archive and restore
their Lotus Notes documents without disrupting user access," said Nora
Denzel, software business line manager, IBM Storage Systems Division.
"ADSM allows organizations to manage Notes backups more easily, speed data
transfer time and save disk storage space, all of which result in
considerable cost savings."

IBM will demonstrate its ADSM Lotus Notes Backup Agent capabilities at
Lotusphere next week in Orlando, Fla. (Booth #S70).

ADSM allows administrators to backup and archive either an entire Notes
database or just the portions which have changed since the previous backup
process (incremental backup). ADSM has additional Notes-specific features
at the client end, providing user access to retrieval commands directly
from the Notes user interface. As a result, users will be able to
instantly retrieve their Notes documents with a simple desktop command,
without requiring administrator intervention.

"Organizations that use Notes as a communications and organizational tool
for mission-critical data cannot afford to take data off-line to back it
up," said Steve Sayle, vice president, Communications Products Division,
Lotus Development Corporation. "Companies are now betting their businesses
on Lotus Notes, and ADSM will provide the means to effectively backup and
retrieve their company data."

As the industry's leading, open client/server storage management solution
for the enterprise, ADSM is another example of IBM's commitment to
network-centric computing. ADSM provides administrator-controlled, highly
automated, centrally scheduled backup, archiving and hierarchical storage
management capabilities for the heterogeneous enterprise.

ADSM has the broadest range of client/server platforms in the industry.
Members of the ADSM family are currently available for use as servers on
eight different IBM and non-IBM operating systems: OS/2, OS/400, AIX, MVS,
VM, VSE/ESA, HP-UX* and Solaris*. Backup and archiving capabilities are
available for virtually every popular client platform, including DOS,
OS/2, AIX, DEC ULTRIX*, HP-UX, Macintosh*, Microsoft Windows*, Novell
Netware*, SCO Open Desktop*, SCO UNIX 386*, SunOS*, Solaris and SINIX*.
Data may be stored on a variety of IBM and non-IBM devices including disk
drives, stand-alone tape subsystems and tape library systems.

In order to achieve high data availability and protect corporate data, ADSM
maintains a comprehensive record of data storage. It stores information
about registered clients, policies assigned to those clients and client
access authorization. A recovery log records all database changes, making
reconstruction possible in the event of a system failure. Should a
database or recovery log failure occur, ADSM provides multiple backups,
helping customers to recover their data and to safeguard business
productivity during downtime.

The ADSM Lotus Notes Release 4 Backup Agent is scheduled for availability
the first half of 1996 for OS/2 Notes servers; support for other Notes
server platforms is planned for later this year. Support for Lotus Notes
Release 3.X has been available since Oct. 1995. IBM's ADSM Lotus Notes
Backup Agent is available at no extra cost as part of the ADSM licensed
product.

These products may be purchased through IBM marketing representatives, from
IBM Direct (1-800-IBM-CALL) and through leading software distributors. The
software is also marketed as a member of IBM's SystemView family of
products, the company's initiative for system management product
functions.

IBM is a leading supplier of computer storage products. Through its Storage
Systems Division, the company provides a full line of storage solutions
for use with IBM systems and offers selected products for attachment to
non-IBM processors. These products are offered directly from IBM and
through a large network of IBM Business Partners. Certain products,
primarily hard disk drives, are offered for use by Original Equipment
Manufacturers (OEMs); they are marketed through a direct sales force and
via commercial distributors. Besides disk drives, IBM's portfolio of
storage products includes disk-based arrays and subsystems; magnetic tape
drives, subsystems and automated libraries; optical libraries; storage
controllers; and related storage management software.
