HP Drops Prices Up To 15 Percent On Omnibook 5000 And 600 Notebook PCs

HP Now Offers Pentium/PCI Performance for Under $3,000

PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA. JANUARY 22, 1996 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today
announced that it has cut prices up to 15 percent on its HP OmniBook 5000
Pentium notebook PCs. HP also lowered prices 10 percent to 15 percent on
the small-notebook line of OmniBook 600 notebook PCs.

Starting with the HP OmniBook 5000C 5/75 notebook PC at $2,925(1), HP's new
pricing offers a competitive entry point for true desktop Pentium
processor/PCI performance in a notebook package.

HP's OmniBook 600 notebook PCs, powered by an Intel 75MHz 486 DX4 processor
and weighing less than 4 lbs., are expected to sell for as low as $1,990.

"After being in the color notebook market for just over a year, HP has
managed to break into the Top 10 worldwide(2), capture the J.D. Power
award and offer the fastest-performing Pentium processor notebook in the
industry (3)," said Christopher (Chris) Morgan, worldwide marketing
manager of HP's Mobile Computing Division. "This aggressive new pricing
reinforces HP's commitment to bringing high-performance, cost-effective
mobile computing solutions to market."

The HP OmniBook 5000 notebook PC series includes a full range of 75MHz,
90MHz and 120MHz Pentium-based models, including the recently announced HP
OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120 notebook PC. The HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120
notebook PC, priced at $6,295, offers a 120MHz Pentium processor, 1.2GB
hard-drive standard, 256K L2 cache and up to 64MB RAM. Also, as with the
entire line of OmniBook 5000 notebook PCs, the HP OmniBook 5000 CTS 5/120
notebook PC is based on the PCI bus, which enables accelerated graphics
and input/output performance.

Estimated street prices for the premium models of the OmniBook 5000
notebook PCs begin at $4,730 for an HP OmniBook 5000 CT 5/90 notebook PC
with a VGA active-matrix display, an 810GB hard-disk drive and 8MB RAM.

Estimated street prices for VL models of the OmniBook 5000 notebook PCs
begin at $2,925 for the HP OmniBook 5000 C 5/75 notebook PC. The VL, or
Value Line, offers high-performance notebooks at more mainstream prices.
The VL models include 75MHz and 90MHz Pentium processors and other
high-performance features of the HP OmniBook 5000 notebook PC line, with
the exception of L2 cache and SCSI. The VL models include a nickel metal
hydride battery rather than a longer-lasting lithium ion one. A one-year
limited warranty on the VL models replaces the three-year limited warranty
that is standard with premium models.
