FORE SYSTEMS DELIVERS MACINTOSH PCI BUS ADAPTER WITH DRIVERS FOR APPLE OPEN
TRANSPORT FORERUNNER

PCA-200EMAC ATM ADAPTER ACHIEVES 108 MBPS THROUGHPUT -HIGHEST MACINTOSH
PERFORMANCE ATTAINED RUNNING LAN EMULATION

Pittsburgh, PA -January 8, 1996 - FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:FORE), a
worldwide leader in networking products based on asynchronous transfer
mode (ATM) technology, today announced the availability of the ForeRunner

PCA-200EMAC PCI Bus ATM adapter card with drivers for Apple Open Transport.
The ForeRunner PCA-200EMAC combines the industry's most advanced hardware
and software features to provide the highest ATM networking throughput
available for Macintosh computers. As with all FORE ATM adapters, the
PCA-200EMAC complies with ATM Forum standards, including LAN Emulation 1.0
and UNI 3.0.

"Apple is very pleased to have an industry leader such as FORE Systems as a
developer of PCI-based ATM solutions for the Macintosh platform," stated
David Singer, ATM development manger, Apple Computer, Inc. "The
combination of FORE's advanced ATM technology and Apple's Open Transport
will significantly enhance Macintosh users standards based ATM networking
performance."

UNPARALLELED PERFORMANCE

Prior to the development of Apple's Open Transport operating system,
performance of ATM adapter cards for Macintosh computers was limited to a
peak of approximately 4 Mbps due to the AppleTalk and MacTCP protocol
stacks. Now, with a ForeRunner PCA-200EMAC adapter running Open Transport,
throughput as high as 108 Mbps can be achieved.

The combination of FOREs PCA-200EMAC ATM adapter and Apple's Open Transport
gives Macintosh users the speed, quality of service, and scalability
available only with ATM technology.

"Using FORE's widely-accepted ATM adapter products, Avid has introduced
server and networking products to automate the production and delivery of
broadcast news," said Brian Cashman, product line manager of networking
products at Avid Technology, Inc. "We believe the new PCA-200EMAC card
from FORE will enhance the Macintosh as a network client for both our
broadcast and post-production customers."

SUPPORT FOR OPEN TRANSPORT ON NUBUS ADAPTERS

Over a year ago, FORE announced the ForeRunner NBA-200 NuBus ATM adapter
with drivers for MacTCP and AppleTalk, the first ATM adapter available for
Macintosh computers. FORE is now offering the NBA- 200 ATM adapter with
the Open Transport driver as well. Macintosh users implementing Open
Transport on NuBus adapters have reported a significant increase in
performance.

ADVANCED 200E SERIES ATM ADAPTER ARCHITECTURE

The PCA-200EMAC is the latest addition to the ForeRunner 200E Series ATM
adapter card line. This third generation adapter family is based on an
elegant four element design: Enhanced Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR)
Processor, bus-specific interface ASIC, integrated physical media
dependent interface, and i960 processor.

The Enhanced SAR Processor (ESP) is a FORE-designed ASIC that handles all
segmentation and reassembly functions, relieving the host processor from
this task. The ESP is ABR-ready and features rate shaping capability. The
second element, FORE's bus-specific ASIC, is finely tuned to the specific
host bus. The third element, the physical media dependent interface, has
been integrated directly onto each adapter to reduce the cost. Finally,
the integral i960 processor provides a high level of performance and
flexibility for future firmware and software enhancements.

INDUSTRY LEADERSHIP

FORE offers the most complete ATM adapter line in the industry, with
support for SBus, EISA bus, GIO bus, PCI bus, NuBus, MicroChannel bus, and
VMEbus computers. FORE shipped the worlds first ATM adapter card, and has
remained at the forefront of ATM technology by offering increasingly
advanced solutions, while lowering prices. Last July, all adapter prices
were again reduced up to 40%.

According to the most recent Dataquest report, FORE has over a 70% share of
the ATM adapter market and the largest installed base in the industry.

"FORE was the first vendor to provide ATM adapters in 1991, and we released
the first Macintosh adapter in 1994," remarked George Prodan, director of
marketing, ATM adapter cards. "Now, we are expanding our offerings to PCI
bus Macintoshes running Open Transport, shattering the ATM performance
barrier on the Macintosh platform." He added, "With FORE ATM products,
customers receive the most comprehensive and integrated ATM solution
available."

AVAILABILITY

ForeRunner PCA-200EMAC orders are now being accepted. The PCA-200EMAC
supports Apple Power Macintosh computers with System 7.5 or greater
running Open Transport 1.1 at 155 Mbps OC-3c/STM-1 with UTP Category 5 and
multimode fiber interfaces.
