NEW SOFTWARE PACKAGE INTEGRATES VEHICLE CRASH AND OCCUPANT SIMULATION UNDER
A SINGLE USER INTERFACE

(Bingham Farms, Michigan -- January 11, 1996) EASi Engineering, Inc.
announces EASi-CRASH, a software package that integrates the complete
vehicle crash and occupant simulation process under a single user
interface for dramatic productivity improvements. The new program handles
all aspects of model building, dataset preparation, results evaluation,
reports generation and design comparisons. EASi-CRASH has been developed
by crash engineers around crash processes. This accounts for its greatly
enhanced productivity.

EASi-CRASH gives users full access to the complex and powerful crash codes
because it knows their possibilities and is specific to crash simulation.
Its intelligent editor allows for the creation of multiple windows with
multiple models that allow for the rapid set up of complex crash models.
EASi-CRASH is based on more than 10 years of practical experience in crash
simulation and tailored to the needs of the user. "People who do crash
simulation have to be very comfortable with the process driven menu
structure, and we believe EASi-CRASH gives them that comfort," Prakash
Krishnaswamy, President of EAST Engineering, Inc., said.

EASi-CRASH provides a seamless application specific integrated environment
for various crash solvers such as LS DYNA (crash analysis), MADYMO
(occupant simulation studies), and CRUSH II (lumped mass analysis). The
program transfers data seamlessly between these different programs without
requiring the user to export or import files. To prepare data sets for LS
DYNA and MADYMO, for example, the user can perform all coupling related
interactions under a common windows environment rather than in two
separate environments as is currently necessary.

Traditionally, crash simulation and occupant analysis is done manually,
with engineers making sure that all the objects, including the occupant,
the vehicle and the impact object are in the correct position. Data entry
is done with no visual feedback; the user enters text information through
the keyboard and never sees the created model until the analysis is run.
The analysis often needs to be re-run many times because of simple errors
in setting up the analysis.

EASi-CRASH allows crash simulation objects to be positioned in far less
time by manipulating graphical objects in a common environment. An
immediate 3D wireframe or shaded visual image is displayed from different
views and in multiple active windows if so chosen. This allows
verification of model accuracy before the analysis is run.

EASi-CRASH enables crash users to build the crash models that includes
creation of contacts, checking initial penetration, creation and
assignment of material models, creation and positioning of airbag and seat
belt systems, quick access to crash databases, etc. all in a graphical
environment.

One of the features of EASi-CRASH includes the ability to run more than one
model at a time and see the differences. The program can run any vehicle
crashing into any type of object. The product can also highlight maximum
stress points during a crash, as well as cut a slice through a vehicle to
provide information on a specific component.

EAST-CRASH also includes a seamless interface for building lumped mass
crash analysis models to perform structural optimization and to estimate
pulse data for occupant simulation studies. The module allows the user to
graphically create all lumped mass entities such as mass and energy
absorbers. Results of the analysis can be visualized through synchronized
animation and time history plots simultaneously.

Post processing is also performed in a single environment under which all
crash specific post processing features can be performed without having to
run several data translators. The deformation option makes it possible to
change display options during animation without having to regenerate
animation frames. The visualization panel enables users to directly
superimpose results on the deformed model such as Von Mises stress,
plastic strain, etc. Time history plots can be loaded and synchronized
with the animation window. A built-in report generator automates layout of
text and plots throughout the whole computer aided engineering process and
eliminates manual cut and paste report preparation.

The new software package is the first product created from EASi's VISTA
object oriented software architecture. The VISTA architecture has been
built from scratch for superior graphics speed, is modular for easier
enhancements, and facilitates rapid application development through
reusable objects. VISTA provides the potential for re-engineering the
automotive design process by standardizing engineering modeling and
analysis tools under a single user interface. It paves the way towards
standard templates that define the optimal methodology to help automakers
meet Federal safety standards.

EASi-CRASH is available or. most major UNIX-based computer workstations
including: Silicon Graphics, Hewlett-Packard, Sun and IBM systems. These
workstations should be equipped with current operating systems, 24-bit Z
buffer, and a minimum of 32 megabytes of RAM.

Founded in 1981, EASi Engineering has a staff of over 150 professionals and
is one of the largest suppliers of computer-aided engineering services to
the automobile industry. EASi's capabilities include structural crash
simulation, occupant simulation, biomechanics, linear and nonlinear
finite-element analysis, and optimization as well as kinematics and
dynamic. analysis. Additional capabilities include analysis of noise,
vibration and harshness, and alternate materials evaluation including
structural plastics and composites. The company also offers EASi-BUMPER
and EASi-SEAL software which allows the material and geometry of
automotive bumpers and seals respectively to be analyzed and optimized on
a personal computer without building a prototype.
