First 12.1" TFT Screen in an Industrial Notebook

All-Metal NEMA 4 Notebook Survives Abuse in Hostile Environments

Fremont, CA, January 2, 1996-Today, Dolch Computer Systems introduced the
NotePAC (Notebook Portable Add-in Computer), an extremely rugged
expandable platform with the industry's first 12.1" Super VGA TFT display,
specifically designed to survive the rigors of field and factory
environments. Sheathed in a sealed nigh-strength alloy casing, the NotePAC
extends the legendary performance of Dolch's massively expandable PAC
computers into hostile military, industrial and aerospace
applications-unforgiving environments, merciless to ordinary portables.
Small and lightweight at 14 pounds, the NotePAC provides outstanding
battery-powered carry-anywhere-performance in an almost indestructable
package that's impervious to hostile environments.

Massive Screen Boasts 56% More Information Displayed

Displaying 800 x 600 pixels over 70 square inches of display area, the
NotePAC's next generation color TFT screen boasts 56% greater information
content and 36% greater viewing area than conventional 10.4" TFT screens.
In fact, the NotePAC screen shows as much data as a 14" CRT. Mounted in a
pressure-cast aluminum housing, NotePAC's 12.1" diagonal super VGA screen
is the first to bring high resolution performance to environmentally
demanding applications. For operation in direct sunlight, NotePAC offers a
high contrast TSTN monochrome display.

Impact and Vibration Proof

Borrowing heavily from MIL-SPEC packaging technology, the NotePAC survives
extreme levels of shock and vibration. It uses specifically qualified
components and Isoguard shock mounting technology to swallow harmful
multi-axis mechanical energy. In operation, the NotePAC can withstand a
20G impulse without damage and, when turned off, a 50G impact-akin to
dropping it from your lap to the floor! Likewise, the NotePAC has a great
tolerance to broad ranges of vibration, operating in environments
generating up to 2G's of continuous random-frequency energy, like those in
tracked vehicles, rotary-winged aircraft and foundries.

NEMA 4, Runs in the Rain

Drawing on its industrial technology leadership, Dolch crafted the NotePAC
to NEMA 4 standards making it impervious to moisture and condensation.
With a sealed keyboard and hinged closures for all access ports, the
NotePAC not only survives exposure to high moisture environments but
operates in the rain! It's protected from a precipitation density of 2.5
gallons per square foot per hour. This means field operations aren't
curtailed due to inclement weather.

Sealed Like a Vault

Hostile environments impose harsh conditions-blowing dust, fumes, airborne
pollutants. The NotePAC's unique sealed alloy casing eludes these
particularly challenging problems. It's sealed like a vault, with no fans,
vents or openings-nothing gets in, no dust, particulates or contaminants.
To maintain NotePAC's environmental integrity, easy opening sealed covers
are provided for all removable devices, interface connections and the
floppy drive bay.

OmniSlice Expansion Module

The NotePAC continues the tradition of flexibility and expandability, long
the hallmark of Dolch products. The core set of expansion is furnished by
two PCMCIA type II slots, usable as one type III is desired. Beyond this
base level, the NotePAC extends its expansion flexibility through the
unique OmniSlice modules. These rugged, all-metal expansion slices allows
integration of an AT cards, a CD-ROM drive or PC-104 modules with the
expanded unit, thus providing enhanced flexibility in configuring the
NotePAC for a specific application. Also, the OmniSlice's clever
mechanical design preserves the NotePAC's ruggedness, and environmental
protection.

Highly Configurable

An Intel 486DX4-100 CPU is standard with memory configurations from 4 MB to
36 MB. Select hard drives of 520 MB or 1.2 GB. They all come mounted in
rugged removeable DataPak modules. The shielded DataPak module is quickly
swappable providing security and easy data transfer to other NotePACs or
fixed base systems. For operation away from line power, a 2.4 amp-hour
battery pack provides up to 2 hours of operation at remote sites along
with an optional STATpack external power station that provides up to 10
hours of autonomous operation.

About Dolch Computer Systems
