DIGITAL POWERS PAST THE COMPETITION; SHIPS 1000th AlphaServer 8000 SYSTEM

Japanese bank bets its data warehouse future on Alpha

Market demand validates the power and affordability of 64-bit computing

MAYNARD, Mass., January 24, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced that in just seven months it has shipped 1,000 high-end
AlphaServer 8000 series enterprise systems, the industry's most powerful
servers.

The 1000th AlphaServer 8000 customer is Mitsui Trust and Banking Co., Ltd.,
one of Japan's leading financial houses and a member of the Mitsui Group.
Mitsui Trust has installed a Digital UNIX AlphaServer 8400 symmetric
multiprocessing (SMP) system for a data warehousing application using the
Oracle7 database and SAS Institute software.

According to Pauline Nist, Digital vice president of the AlphaServer
Business Segment at Digital, "Since the first AlphaServer 8000 system went
out the door last June, we have already shipped more systems than the IBM
RS/6000 Scalable POWERparallel System, which has been shipping for nearly
three years. This milestone is one more indication of the explosive market
enthusiasm for our 64-bit Alpha systems."

AlphaServer Systems -- The World's Most Powerful Servers

The AlphaServer 8400 delivers the power, throughput, and balanced processor
and I/O performance to handle the most demanding large commercial,
technical, and multi-user applications.

AlphaServer systems hold world database transaction records for a single
system solution and single-CPU solution, and for leading databases,
including Oracle7, Sybase System 11, and Microsoft SQL Server, as well as
for the SAP R/3 application suite and a number of Internet and other
applications.

Today's power-hungry applications, such as data warehousing, OLTP,
simulation, and modeling, as well as Internet and general business
applications, are driving demand for the performance and fully-available
64-bit very large memory (VLM64) computing environment offered only by
Alpha.

Only Digital is shipping the high-performance 64-bit servers, AlphaServer
systems, and a 64-bit operating system, Digital UNIX, which together make
VLM64 possible. Digital's VLM64 technology dramatically improves database
and application performance by raising the amount of information that can
be stored in memory. All 32-bit systems are limited to 2GB of memory.
Today AlphaServer 8400 systems can store up to 14GB of data in memory,
with more in the future.

Demonstrating the Dramatic Growth of AlphaServer Systems

In announcing the AlphaServer 8000 milestone, Nist outlined a host of other
recent developments in the AlphaServer line-up that offer compelling
evidence of the power, scalability, and affordability of Digital's premier
computing solutions:

o Major customers, such as American Credit Indemnity, Baxter
Healthcare, Best Western Hotels, Genentech, Milwaukee
Sentinel-Journal, Mitel, Polish National Railway, Reuben H.
Donnelley, Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club, the State University
of New York, and Wells Fargo Bank are moving to Alpha for
their line-of-business applications. The list includes
high-profile companies and small start-ups in virtually
every market, such as telecommunications, finance, science,
        healthcare, retailing, and government.

o All the major database vendors, including Informix, Oracle,
Software AG, and Sybase, now support Digital's VLM64
capabilities to offer their customers breakthrough database
        performance.

o Sixty percent of AlphaServer 8000 systems are shipping with
the Digital UNIX operating system; the balance are shipping
with the OpenVMS OS. Both feature full 64-bit capability.
While other major vendors are struggling to introduce one
64-bit OS, Digital is already supplying two.

o A significant number of the AlphaServer 8000 shipments are
in the fast-growing data warehousing market. The AlphaServer
was recently certified as one of the industry's first
platforms to earn the Oracle Warehouse Test-to-Scale
        certification.

o A recent reader satisfaction survey by Computerworld reveals
that in all five categories -- batch performance, on-line
        transaction performance, reliability, scalability, and
service and support -- more readers give their Digital
high-end AlphaServer systems "very good" marks than those
with competitive systems from HP, IBM, and Sun.

o Digital recently introduced the first wave of products and
services that facilitate the integration of OpenVMS and
Windows NT. These capabilities make it increasingly easy to
develop, deploy, integrate and manage applications across
        both platforms in a three-tier client/server environment.

o In December Digital announced new technology -- a PCI to
Memory Channel interconnect -- that enables its highly
scalable AlphaServer systems to deliver new levels of
affordability and price/performance for the technical
        computing market.

o In December the company opened the doors to its new Database
Technology Center (DBTC), located in Palo Alto, Calif. The
DBTC offers world-class database technology expertise
designed to help customers capitalize on the performance and
productivity advantages afforded by Digital's VLM64
technology and that of its database software partners.

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computing to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's scalable Alpha platforms, storage, networking,
software and services, together with industry- focused solutions from
business partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
