Crescent Delivers First Comprehensive Set of VB Tools For Building
Internet-Enabled Applications

Bedford, Mass., USA, January 16, 1995 -- The Crescent Division of Progress
Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS) today announced the immediate
availability of Crescent Internet ToolPak, a high-level toolset that
enables Visual Basicr developers to more easily build internetworked
Windowsapplications and utilities.

Unique from other Internet tools, Crescent Internet ToolPak shields users
from low-level programming and the necessity of learning many complex
Internet protocols (e.g., SMTP, POP, HTML, etc.). Built specifically to
complement the Visual Basic Version 4 environment, Crescent Internet
ToolPak is event-driven, and conforms to applicable RFC standards.

Internet ToolPak allows Visual Basic developers to create sophisticated
Internet-enabled applications with a minimum of coding through the use of
a set of OCX controls and an Internet mail "Wizard." As an integrated
suite of OLE controls, Crescent Internet ToolPak ensures compatibility
between controls, and the ability to build sophisticated applications with
confidence. Crescent Internet ToolPak also includes numerous
demonstrations and sample programs to shorten the learning curve.

"For Visual Basic developers, the Internet and World Wide Web play an
increasingly important role in the development and deployment of
applications. Crescent Internet ToolPak answers a rising market demand for
Internet-enabling tools," said Jennifer J. Bergantino, director of the
Crescent Division of Progress Software. "The excitement around Internet
ToolPak reinforces our position as the leading-edge Visual Basic tool and
component provider."

Crescent Internet ToolPak consists of six 32-bit OCX controls and an
Internet mail Wizard for building Internet-enabled applications in Visual
Basic. The tools include:

* Two Internet Mail controls -- Used for creating Internet e-mail
applications supporting POP and SMTP mail protocols. Support includes mail
sending, monitoring, receiving and of messages. Unique to this control is
the ability to receive mail from multiple server sites without changing
configurations. These controls allow Visual Basic developers to quickly
build mail-enabled applications suited to the needs of their
organizations.

* Newsgroup control -- Used for creating applications involving
communication with USENET newsgroups. The newsgroup control can be used to
create "intelligent news reader" applications, allowing users to get the
information they need without time- consuming "surfing."

* Web/http control -- Used for creating customized World Wide Web client
applications. This control is used to read/write data from and to Web
sites. This allows Visual Basic developers to take full advantage of the
power of the World Wide Web without coding to the protocol level, for
example to build a customized "Web searcher" in Visual Basic.

* FTP control -- Used for creating FTP applications supporting file
transfers to and from FTP servers, and for monitoring FTP sites for the
posting of new files.

* Client/Server control -- Used for creating applications involving TCP/IP
messaging and file transfer, using the industry-standard TCP/IP protocol.
TCP/IP has become the de facto standard for messaging and file transfer,
and this control will mask many of the intricacies of TCP/IP, and ease
development in Visual Basic.

* Internet Mail Wizard -- The Wizard improves programmer productivity, by
providing the Visual Basic developer with multiple-choice questions about
the Internet mail application s/he would like to build. The user's
response is then used to tailor a mail application to the user's
specifications, with a minimum of coding. Source code for this Wizard is
also provided, to speed further customization efforts.

Crescent Internet ToolPak requires Visual Basic Version 4.0, and supports
