Boole & Babbage Delivers Command and Control of Client/Server Systems With
Ensign R3

Out-of-the-Box Solution Enhanced With a New Console, Over 50 Automation
Modules, and Three New Applications

San Jose, California - January 15, 1996 -- Boole & Babbage, Inc. (NASDAQ:
BOOL), the leader in enterprise automation solutions for distributed
systems, today announced a major new release of Ensign, its event
management and systems administration solution for multisite,
heterogeneous client/server environments. The new release, known as Ensign
R3, features new support for Windows NT, in addition to Novell NetWare and
13 leading UNIX operating systems, a new distributed control console, more
than 50 predefined surveillance and automation modules, plus
interoperability with Scheduling, Software Distribution and Trouble
Ticketing applications -- all in a low cost, easy to install management
suite.

"Ensign R3 now delivers the consolidation, integration and automation
capabilities necessary to improve service levels of mission-critical
applications being deployed on virtually any UNIX or PC LAN server," said
Saverio Merlo, senior vice president, marketing of Boole & Babbage.

True Multiplatform Support

Ensign R3 offers support for PC LAN servers running NetWare, version 3.1
and 4.1, and Windows NT, expanding its reach to the majority of
client/server systems being deployed or in production. In addition, Ensign
R3 offers the most extensive support for UNIX platforms, including IBM
AIX, HP-UX, SUN OS, Solaris, SNI Sinix, SGI IRIX, SCO UNIX, AT&T GIS, NCR
Tower, Dolphin, Ultrx and Digital UNIX (formerly OSF/1). From a common
interface, administrators can now easily configure and deploy a solution
that manages availability and daily operations of their heterogeneous
UNIX, NetWare and NT environments.

Integrated Console for Optimum Event Management

A new customizable console integrates alert and system administration
functions. Icons correlated to color-coded alerts let operators
simultaneously identify both server and application problems, and drill
down to the appropriate corrective action. A new intelligent Ensign
Request Broker (ERB) module features a rules-based architecture that
forwards alerts representing certain critical conditions to the
appropriate notification device, including UNIX-mail, SNMP manager, pager,
printer or fax. For example, critical alerts appearing during non-business
hours can be automatically escalated to an alternate console in a
different time zone, or to a pager to notify an on-call technician.
Additionally, ERB performs automated polling for IP devices, such as PCs,
routers, bridges and hubs, as well as heartbeat checking for Ensign
Agents.

Through the new Troubleshoot function, an alert message can be accompanied
by context-sensitive graphical tools or automated corrective actions to
resolve specific problems. In this way, critical alerts can be resolved by
both highly-skilled systems administrators or Help Desk support staff with
limited knowledge of UNIX commands.

Because the Ensign R3 MultiPoint-Control architecture allows selected
routine alerts to be distributed to junior administrators and Help Desk
staff at distributed consoles, centralized senior administrators can focus
their expertise on more high-level management tasks, such as security
violations, systems automation and computer environment expansion.

Enhanced Automation

More than 50 predefined filters and automation modules allow Ensign R3 to
begin troubleshooting and automating system fixes immediately following
installation, without customization. When customization is desired, a new
graphical Alarm Builder creates alert management rules, eliminating
time-intensive development and maintenance of alert definition and
automation rules.

Management-in-a-Box

A new "out-of-the-box" intelligent install program plus consolidated CD
packaging enables Ensign R3 to install in less than 10 minutes. "Most
distributed systems management products require significant development
efforts before they can provide basic management functionality in a
customer environment," said Chet Geschickter, vice president of the
Hurwitz Consulting Group in Boston. "There is a strong need in the market
for pragmatic solutions like Ensign R3 that can deliver
management-in-a-box capabilities at affordable prices."

Application Interoperability & Enterprise Scalability

Ensign R3 also functions as an open platform for running best-of- breed
management applications, including OCS Express for Scheduling, Remedy ARS
for trouble ticketing and Tangram AM:PM for software distribution.

An integration toolkit is also available for customers who want to
integrate Ensign R3 with their existing system management applications.
Native applications can be launched from the Ensign R3 console. Ensign R3
will also ensure their usability and availability by checking processes
and sending alert messages to appropriate consoles, as required.

Ensign R3 intelligent agent technology extends the scalability and reach of
COMMAND/POST, the Boole & Babbage enterprise management solution, as well
as the leading frameworks like HP OpenView and IBM SystemView for AIX.

Pricing and Availability

Ensign R3 will be shipping during Q1 1996. Pricing begins at $5,000. For
