Apple Presents Innovative Scholar Award to Chilean Education Project

Enlaces Project Creating Nationwide Computer Network to Link all Chilean
Schools

CUPERTINO, California--January 15, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. today
presented the first Apple Innovative Scholar Award to the Enlaces Project,
a program of the Chilean Ministry of Education. The award recognizes the
program's outstanding contributions to the improvement and equity of
education in Chile through the pioneering use of computers and the
Internet. The goal of the Chilean program is to create a nationwide
computer and telecommunications network that will eventually link all
Chilean schools, from kindergarten through 12th grade.

"We selected the Enlaces Project as our first winner because it
demonstrates the power of new technologies to bring rich curriculum,
teacher development, and administrative support to poor and isolated
schools," said Dr. David Dwyer, Apple distinguished scientist, Advanced
Technology Group.

The Apple Innovative Scholar Award consists of a U.S.$50,000 stipend to
support six months of residence for a member of the recipient team at the
Apple's Research and Development complex in Cupertino, California. The
recipient will work closely with the company's Apple Classrooms of
Tomorrow (ACOT) research group.

In addition, the award supports the completion of a book-length manuscript
describing the origin, development, and successful practices of the
recipient organization.

This award was established to recognize university-based scholars for their
personal and professional contributions and/or future promise of
significant contributions to the field of education. In addition, the
program strives to make the work of the recipient accessible to a broad
audience of people with a vested interest in education including parents,
teachers, school administrators, education researchers and policy makers.
