Apple Ships Enhanced Development Tools

Release 19 of E.T.O. and MPW Pro Delivers Power Macintosh Platform
Performance and Functionality Through Rich, Affordable Tools for
Developers

MACWORLD, SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 9, 1996--Continuing its
commitment to provide a rich development toolset for Apple Macintosh and
native Power Macintosh development, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced
shipment of release 19 of its E.T.O.: Essentials * Tools * Objects, and
MPW Pro development products. New software components included in these
products make it easier for developers to adopt key Mac OS technologies
and to develop higher-performance applications while shortening time to
market. Developers can see a demonstration of the tools during MacWorld
Expo San Francisco, January 9-12 in the North Hall at the Developer
Central booth #3400.

"We have listened to the needs of our developer community and responded
with key enhancements and new features in this release of our core
development tools," said Ricardo Gonzalez, acting manager of Apple's
Developer Tools Product Marketing Group. "We're particularly pleased with
the tools for facilitating the development of fast
applications--MrC/MrCpp, our new C/C++ compiler, and MrPlus, a new
performance tuning tool. Additionally our new runtime software, CFM-68K
and SOMobjects for Mac OS, will simplify the development of both
procedural and object-oriented shared libraries."

E.T.O. and MPW Pro: Release 19 Major Features

MRC/MRCPP 1.0

Highly-optimizing C and C++ compilers which developers can use to create
native Power Macintosh applications with considerably faster runtime
performance than if built using other popular compilers. Performance
improvements vary with the application, but some test cases have shown up
to 25% improvement.

MACAPP 3.3

A significant upgrade to Apple's popular object-oriented application
development framework. It features many performance enhancements and
includes integrated support for system technologies such as Open Scripting
Architecture (the foundation on which AppleScript is built),
Drag-and-Drop, and PowerTalk mailers.

POWER MACINTOSH DEBUGGER 2.0

An even easier-to-use version of Apple's standard one- and two-system
debugger.

CFM-68K

The first release of Code Fragment Manager for 68K Macintosh systems,
runtime software that enables developers to create shared libraries and
drop-in code modules for 680x0-based applications in much the same way
they do today for native Power Macintosh applications.

SOMOBJECTS FOR MAC OS

The first release of SOMobjects for Mac OS, an object-oriented programming
technology for building, packaging and manipulating binary class
libraries. SOM adds value to CFM-68K runtime because it can be used to
develop an object-oriented programming interface to a shared library.

SC/SCPP

New C and C++ compilers which generate 68K code and which support the new
CFM-68K runtime model.

MRPLUS

An early development release of MrPlus, a new performance tuning
environment for helping accelerate native Power Macintosh applications.
MrPlus can monitor runtime execution of an application, then rearrange
code for optimal usage of the PowerPC instruction cache and reduce the
number of page faults in a system with virtual memory enabled. MrPlus can
also act as a profiling and code coverage tool.

Lower Price

Apple has lowered the price of both E.T.O. and MPW Pro to make the tools
more accessible for all developers interested in writing applications for
the Macintosh and Power Macintosh platforms. The price for the E.T.O.
Complete New Subscriber Package has been lowered to U.S. $595 (from U.S.
$795). This includes printed manuals for major components, three CDs
containing the software (MPW Pro, Symantec C++ for Power Macintosh, and
Inside Macintosh), and automatic delivery of the next two E.T.O. releases
for free. Releases occur in April, August and December each year. The
price of a one year E.T.O. subscription renewal has been lowered to U.S.
$195 (from U.S. $295).

The price for MPW Pro has been lowered to U.S. $195 (from U.S. $295). This
includes the software on CD and two printed introductory manuals. Other
manuals are included in electronic form on the CD or printed manuals can
be ordered for a separate charge. Current MPW Pro customers can upgrade to
MPW Pro release 19 for U.S. $75.
