MacWorld Expo Rings in the New Year: Apple Showcases Internet Solutions
with Easy Access and Cutting-Edge New Media Technology

MACWORLD, SAN FRANCISCO, California--January 9, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc.
celebrated the New Year today by showcasing innovative Internet solutions
at MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. Designed for the home, schools and
businesses, Apple's Macintosh platform provides easy access to the
Internet as well as multimedia enhancements and innovative solutions for
web authoring and Internet publishing.

"While our competitors ponder the potential of the Internet for tomorrow,
Apple is delivering on easy-to-use, innovative Internet solutions today,"
said Jim Buckley, president, Apple Americas. "Our award-winning QuickTime
VR and QuickDraw 3D technologies bring an added dimension to the Internet
experience while the Apple Internet Connection Kit enables easy access for
anyone anxious to tap into the endless resources in cyberspace."

"Macintosh is the number one Web authoring platform today," Buckley added.
"This year's MacWorld Expo gives us a forum for demonstrating the hot
technologies that have made Apple a leader in on-line solutions."

Buckley examines the customer benefits of Apple's technology in today's
keynote entitled "Apple Innovation: Building on the Solutions Advantage."
The keynote highlights innovative technologies in multimedia,
conferencing, personal digital assistants, and Internet solutions.

At its 11,000 square foot pavilion, Apple demonstrates cutting-edge
Internet and multimedia solutions, including the Apple Internet Connection
Kit, QuickTime VR--virtual reality without the confines of goggles and
gloves--and QuickDraw 3D, winner of MacUser magazine's 1995 editor's
choice award. In addition, Adobe Systems and Apple Computer, Inc. are
hosting a special "Internet Publishing" booth (booth #617), where visitors
can get hands-on experience and learn the easiest way to create their own
home page and manage content using products from Apple and Adobe.

Easy Access to New Dimensions in Cyberspace

MacWorld Seminars Novice and expert 'Net surfers of all ages can explore
the unlimited potential of the Internet and Apple's on-line services at a
series of seminars during MacWorld Expo:

The Internet is providing new avenues for collaboration with others
throughout the country and throughout the world. "Internet: Curriculum,
Connection and Beyond" is a condensed version of Apple's "leading the way"
series in which educators receive assistance from Apple on integrating the
latest and most appropriate technologies into their curriculum. Apple
shows how educators are using the Internet and how easy it can be to get
your school, classroom, and home connected.

"Kids of the 'Net Query Cultural and Technology Executives". Fifteen
year-old eWorld publisher, Alex Hempton represents the Cyberteen
generation by leading a panel discussion where top digital age executives
answer questions about what kids can expect to find in Cyperspace.

Apple will also be demonstrating 'Salon' to MacWorld attendees, a new
lifestyle Web site focusing on the arts, books and ideas. Co-sponsored by
Apple, Salon represents a breakthrough Web site bringing intelligent and
lively discussion of cultural issues to the growing consumer,
non-technical audience on the 'Net. In just weeks after opening its
virtual doors, Salon garnered significant acclaim from Web site ratings
organizations.

In addition, Apple continues its series of Family Computing workshops
designed to introduce parents to the many ways that computers can enhance
their children's learning and demonstrate how they can take an active role
in their child's experience with the computer.

Powerful Tools and Solutions for Developers

Apple again joins forces with MacTech magazine to spotlight the latest
tools, services and information for developers on the Macintosh and Newton
platforms. New products for development of commercial and corporate
applications, multimedia titles and custom solutions are being
demonstrated at the pavilion's 60 display stations. The 10,
000-square-foot pavilion is the largest developer central pavilion in
MacWorld history and features seminars and tutorials on key technologies
from Apple and leading third-party vendors. In addition, an entire wing of
the pavilion is devoted to helping developers learn how to take advantage
of OpenDoc component software technology, which recently became available
from Apple in software developer's kit form. The Developer Central
pavilion is located in Moscone Center, North Hall, booth #3400.

Apple continues to refine its latest version of the Newton operating system
(2.0) by announcing today the availability of enhanced development tools
that offer a more powerful development environment for third- party
developers. The new tools include the Newton Toolkit (NTK) version 1.6 for
Mac OS-based computers. Along with support for Newton 2.0, NTK 1.6 is also
optimized for Power Macintosh and delivers additional debugging tools,
enabling software developers to create more high performance applications
for the Newton platform than for any other PDA platform. In an effort to
broaden its developer base and to address strong demand for Newton
software development tools for the Windows platform, a prerelease version
of NTK 1.6 for Windows is being distributed to selected developers and is
expected to be available by mid year 1996.

The Newton Desktop Integration Libraries (DILs), both Mac and Windows
versions, are also now available on-line and free of charge to developers.
These application programming interfaces (APIs) offer customers direct
synchronization between desktop applications and applications running on a
Newton PDA.

On-site stores at MacWorld Expo are selling dozens of tools and information
products at special show prices, and pavilion visitors receive free
"Virtual Developer Central" reference CD-ROMs.

ABrief Summary of Additional Announcements:

APPLE MEDIA TOOL 2.0

Apple announced a new version of Apple Media Tool and its companion
product, the Apple Media Tool Programming Environment. Version 2.0 of
Apple Media Tool is the company's object-based, cross-platform multimedia
authoring tool. Apple Media Tool is designed for a wide range of users
including creative designers, producers, educators and business
communications professionals. Apple Media Tool 2.0 allows for the creation
of projects that will run fully native on Apple Power Macintosh computers
and incorporate many new features such as support for QuickTime VR,
Apple's multi-platform virtual reality software. The Apple Media Tool
product comes out of the Interactive Media Group, a newly formed group at
Apple which has been chartered to unify Apple's cross-platform multimedia
technology portfolio to deliver a better interactive experience, whether
on the Internet, CD-ROM title, or on a computing device.

CROSS-PLATFORM 3D FILE STANDARD FOR THE INTERNET

Leveraging its acknowledged expertise in 3D technology, Apple announced the
company's 3DMF (3D Metafile) format as a proposed standard for 3D graphics
exchange across the Internet. 3DMF technology is fully cross-platform
across Mac OS, Microsoft Windows, and UNIX to enable 3D graphics exchange
between applications and operating systems with no loss of image quality
or information. 3DMF has been embraced by graphics programs as a way to
easily share 3D models and images across networks and disks. To accelerate
the implementation of 3DMF across the Web and the software industry, 3DMF
may be licensed at no charge for use in commercial and non-commercial
applications.

NEWTON DESKTOP INTEGRATION

Apple announced a suite of products that improves the integration of
Newton-based PDAs with both Mac OS- and Windows-based personal computers.
Both the Mac and Windows version of the Newton Backup Utility (NBU) are
now available on-line and free of charge. NBU allows customers to back up
and restore Newton 2.0 information to a personal computer and also
installs software packages from a PC to a Newton PDA. Because of the
overwhelming interest in Newton Press, a new software application from
Apple that provides a drag & drop method for the creation of electronic
books for Newton PDAs from files on a personal computer, Apple is
distributing a prerelease version to customers on-line. Newton Press for
the Mac OS is available on-line now and the prerelease Windows version is
expected to be available early this year, also available free of charge.

PC-COMPATIBILITY

Expanding its commitment to cross-platform compatibility, Apple
demonstrated Power Macintosh systems, with the industry standard PCI
(peripheral component interconnect) bus, running prototype PC
compatibility cards featuring Pentium and Cyrix 586 processors. The
prototype PC compatibility cards demonstrate the cross-platform potential
of PCI-based Power Macintosh systems to run the widest range of software
applications from the leading PC platforms: Macintosh, DOS and Windows.
