Apple Announces Expanded and Updated Development Environment for the Newton
2.0 Platform

New Tools Increase Developer Productivity, Enable Smoother Integration of
Newton PDAs with Personal Computers

CUPERTINO, California--January 8, 1996--Further establishing Newton as the
premier Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) platform for software
development, Apple Computer, Inc. today announced the availability and
shipment of the latest version of the Newton Toolkit (NTK 1.6) for the
Mac™ OS, and a set of application programming interfaces (APIs), the
Desktop Integration Libraries (DILs), for both the Mac OS and Windows
operating systems.

These tools fully support Newton 2.0, the latest version of the Newton
operating system, and enable developers to create custom solutions and
products for the Newton platform that easily integrate with existing
applications and data on both Mac OS- and Windows-based personal
computers. In addition, Apple announced that a prerelease version of
Newton Toolkit for Windows is currently being distributed to selected
developers.

"Powerful, productive tools are critical for developers in their efforts to
create great software solutions for the Newton platform," said Sandy
Benett, acting vice president of the Newton Systems Group. "By offering
tools for both the Mac OS and Windows operating systems, we are
demonstrating our commitment to meeting the needs of a broad range of
developers."

About Newton Toolkit

The Newton Toolkit, which first began shipping in 1993, is a powerful
development environment designed to ease the creation of Newton software.
It features graphical tools for interface design and rapid prototyping, an
interactive development model, and a large number of built-in components
for creating custom software.

The new version of the Newton Toolkit, NTK 1.6, offers features designed to
make developers more productive and also allows them to take full
advantage of Newton 2.0, the latest version of the Newton operating
system. Newton 2.0 offers new capabilities, including dozens of new or
improved system-level components such as buttons, lists, tables, and input
fields. NTK 1.6 has been optimized for the

Power Macintosh, offering improved performance for developers and also
delivers additional debugging tools that help developers track down and
correct bugs in their applications more quickly.

Desktop Integration Libraries (DILs)

The Desktop Integration Libraries, available now, allow developers of
applications for either the Mac OS or Windows operating systems to
directly synchronize data between their applications and a Newton PDA.
This feature enables seamless data sharing between the Newton device and
personal computers without requiring intermediary translators or
interpreter programs.

For example, Oregon-based Now Software utilize DILs in their new product,
Now Synchronize, a utility that synchronizes the names and dates on a
Newton PDA with the names and dates in Now Up-to- Date & Contact, Now's
leading personal information management software. The DILs make it easy
for software on a personal computer to communicate with data on a Newton
PDA, allowing Now Synchronize to be developed very quickly.

"Apple's DILs set a new standard for integration between PDAs and personal
computers," said Henry Carstens, Now Synchronize Product Manager at Now
Software, Inc. "By enabling Now Synchronize to communicate directly with
names and dates stored on the Newton PDA, the DILs provided the key to
delivering a truly portable time management solution to our customers."

Demonstrations of Newton ToolKit 1.6 and DILs will be shown at Apple
Developer Central at Macworld, along with daily half-hour sessions
(January 9-11) geared towards developers entitled, "Introduction to Newton
2.0".

Newton Toolkit for Windows

Addressing strong demand for Newton software development tools that run on
the Windows platform, Apple announced that a prerelease Windows version of
NTK 1.6 has been distributed to selected sites. The company demonstrated
the package last month at the COMDEX trade show in Las Vegas and plans to
ship a prerelease version of NTK 1.6 for Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and
Windows NT environments in early 1996. Pricing has not yet been set.

Developer Support Programs

Apple offers a range of technical support programs designed to meet the
requirements of its developers. These support programs, which range from
self-help to unlimited, programming-level support, enable developers to
bring a variety of Newton software solutions to market more
cost-effectively than with other PDA platforms. Additionally, technical
training courses are offered through Apple Developer University. For more
information on Apple's Developer University and Developer Technical
Support programs, please call (408) 974-4897.

Apple addresses its key vertical markets through value-added reseller (VAR)
and system integrator (SI) programs, which offer specialized support for
creating custom solutions in the health care, sales force automation,
education, financial services markets as well as many other industries. To
date, more than 250 SIs and VARs have taken advantage of the program
offerings, which include a monthly newsletter, quarterly co-marketing
materials, technology presentations and demonstrations, and an annual
symposium.
