Apple CEO, Michael Spindler Addresses the Education Commission of the
States

Spindler Speaks on the Key Role Technology Plays in Education Reform

DENVER, Colorado---January 5, 1996---In a keynote yesterday to top
policy-makers, educators and business leaders from around the United
States, Apple Computer, Inc. CEO, Michael Spindler addressed the vital
link between technology and education reform. Spindler's keynote kicked
off a two-day meeting of the Education Commission of the States (ECS), a
non-profit, nationwide organization designed to help governors, state
legislators and state education officials to develop policies to improve
the quality of education. The meeting brought together state leaders to
help develop specific plans to initiate, integrate and accelerate
standards and school-to-work programs.

"Preparing today's students to succeed in the workplace of the 21st century
is paramount to the future of our country. We all-- whether we are
business people, policy-makers or educators--have a role and an obligation
to develop a solution together," said Spindler.

In his keynote, Spindler explored three questions. First, what role does
information technology play in the workplace of tomorrow? Second, how can
we effectively apply what we have learned about the impact of technology
on learning? And finally, what implications will all of this have for
public policy? He emphasized that technology is not the solution but it is
the critical connection between school and work. In the public policy
arena, he identified some areas in which policy-makers can work more
closely with the business and education communities to provide adequate
funding, infrastructure, staff development, research and assessment.

Spindler concluded his address by challenging the attendees to work with
the policy-makers and educators in their states to develop a plan that
will help bring all students to a high level of performance. He reinforced
that this is not the responsibility of a single individual or group, but
one that requires working together to effect fundamental change. Spindler
offered Apple's technology expertise and educational research to help in
this national undertaking.

"Policy-makers and educators need to get past partisanship and turf battles
if we're going to give students the chance to learn today what they need
to know to be successful in the world tomorrow," said Wisconsin Governor,
Tommy G. Thompson and ECS chairman.

Apple was invited to address the ECS meeting to share the knowledge it has
gained as a leading provider of learning technologies over the last 18
years. The company has a long and celebrated history of helping educators
effectively integrate technology into the learning environment, and plays
an active role in education-related policy- making by sharing its 10 years
of Apple Classrooms of Tomorrow research and expertise.
