Andyne Introduces Greater Flexibility for Database Queries

Query Management Option Provides Enhanced Management for Enterprise- Wide
Queries

JANUARY 3, 1996 -- KINGSTON, Ontario, Canada -- Andyne Computing Ltd.,
pioneers of the Managed Query Environment, today announced Query
Management Option (QMO) for GQL, a scheduling and management facility that
provides corporations with greater control over database queries. Working
as an extension to Andyne's GQL graphical query and reporting tool, QMO
allows IS administrators to manage the queue of user queries, thus
providing extended control over the demand placed on enterprise database
systems.

"QMO for GQL enhances our customers' ability to manage their businesses by
providing them greater flexibility in performing database queries, as well
as offering added control over when and where data is accessed," said A.
Cameron Thompson, president and CEO of Andyne. "While competitive tools
only offer scheduling capabilities, QMO provides an extended level of
functionality by introducing the ability to regulate DBMS loading and
event sequencing, as well as support for mobile users."

Andyne's Query Management Option manages queries in both the data warehouse
environment and the client/server, transactional database environment. QMO
is highly scalable with functionality ranging from simple scheduling to
support for complete query management. QMO provides three modes of
operation -- Scheduled Mode, Cooperative Mode and Detached Mode.

Scheduled Query Mode

QMO's Scheduled query mode allows end-users to specify when they would like
a query processed. For example, users can defer a query to run at night
when system performance can be maximized. QMO's Scheduled Mode requires no
server-based software or IS involvement and allows GQL users to connect to
other databases - and even exit from GQL - while queued queries are being
processed, thus freeing up workstation time and increasing user
productivity. Once the query is complete, QMO notifies the user.

Cooperative Query Mode

QMO's Cooperative mode allows users and administrators to manage the
execution of queries to regulate DBMS loading and event sequencing. IS
managers can manipulate and manage queries on an enterprise-wide basis.
For example, marketing queries can be scheduled to run at night, but only
once the data warehouse had been updated, thus ensuring the use of the
most up-to-date information. Additionally, QMO allows IS administrators to
put a hold on queries during peak load periods, ensuring appropriate
turnaround for transaction updates. The benefit to the enterprise with QMO
is a more efficient information distribution system coupled with greater
information quality.

Detached Query Mode

The Detached query mode allows the user to submit a query for processing at
a later time, even while their workstation is disconnected or shut down.
This mode provides users the flexibility or running queries from remote
locations. For example, a salesperson can launch a query about a
particular customer sales history, then retrieve the query results at the
customer site, ensuring they have the very latest information. QMO also
supports server-based query managers developed by third parties such as
IW-Manager from NexTek Software. IW-Manager prioritizes and schedules
queries on high-end UNIX systems ensuring that queries are completed more
predictably and resources are used more efficiently. IW-Manager also
provides load balancing on multiprocessor systems.

About Andyne GQL

QMO is an extension to Andyne's successful GQL query and reporting tool.
GQL is a powerfully simple decision support application for accessing
transaction-level data on relational data sources. GQL is fully graphical,
does not require users to remember obscure database names or join
conditions or have knowledge of SQL. GQL is an intuitive, visual solution
that provides an open interface for add-on extensions, allowing end-users
to choose the reporting capability they need. Whether users want columnar
reports, charts and graphs, crosstab reports, forms or labels, GQL's
Report Extensions represent the quickest route between the database and
the desktop.

Pricing and Availability

QMO 1.0 is available for Windows and Macintosh platforms at a list- price
of $199 U.S. per user or $1,595 for a ten user pack. The suggested list
price for Andyne GQL is $695 per user copy which includes support for
crosstabs and charting.

Andyne is a leader in the development and marketing of Decision Support
System (DSS) software with over 55,000 installations worldwide. Andyne
products offer a Managed Query Environment (MQE), synchronizing end-user
needs for access, analysis, and reporting with Information Systems (IS)
needs for security and enterprise-wide consistency. Andyne's applications
offer easy-to-use, visual interfaces that can be customized to suit any
business need. Andyne services all of its products through consulting,
training, and technical support. Andyne is a publicly traded company on
