Adaptec Expands UltraSCSI Product Family For The PCI Power Macintosh

MULTICHANNEL PCI-ULTRASCSI ACCELERATOR MEETS NEEDS OF HIGH SPEED I/O
STORAGE AND RAID ARRAY DEVICES

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF., January 9, 1995 -- Adaptec Inc.(NASDAQ:ADPT) today
announced the PowerDomain 3940 Ultra Wide multichannel PCI-UltraSCSI
accelerator. Designed for high-end I/O performance, the $549 accelerator
offers complete backward compatibility with any combination of SCSI
devices. It utilizes the newest generation of the SCSI standard,
UltraSCSI, at no additional cost to the end-user.

UltraSCSI doubles the data transfer rate of the PowerDomain 3940UW to 40
MB/sec., for narrow SCSI devices, and provides up to 80 MB/sec., for
today's Wide UltraSCSI peripherals. The PowerDomain 3940UW meets the
higher I/O bandwidth requirements of data-intensive applications like
video editing, pre-press, desktop publishing and multimedia.

Adaptec's other PCI Power Macintosh product is the PowerDomain 2940UW,
which retails for $349. Adaptec plans to announce additional PCI-UltraSCSI
products for the PCI Power Macintosh later in 1996.

"This announcement demonstrates Adaptec's expanded commitment to the
Macintosh platform. We are providing Macintosh users with state of the
art, high-performance I/O solutions for the PCI Power Macintosh," said
Drew Hoffman, vice president and general manager, entry servers and
workstations for Adaptec's Enterprise Computing Group.

The PowerDomain 3940UW uses the Adaptec PhaseEngine RISC processor to
provide premium CPU utilization for the PCI Power Macintosh. With its
multichannel architecture, the accelerator can simultaneously configureany
combination of up to 30 SCSI-1, Fast SCSI, (8- and 16-bit), SCSI-2 and
UltraSCSI peripherals.

Adaptec has included two external connectors so connectivity for Macintosh
users will be simple and there will be sufficient slots for expansion. The
AHA-3940UW is simple to install using PowerDomain Control software that
comes with the kit. In addition, users have the option of including Remus
and Remus Lite array software from Trillium Research, an Adaptec company
that specializes in Macintosh RAID solutions.

"PCI is becoming the bus of choice for demanding Macintosh applications
that require high-speed I/O. Multichannel UltraSCSI is the next logical
step to improve system performance for the PCI Power Macintosh community,"
said John Valentine, marketing manager for Macintosh products in Adaptec's
Enterprise Computing Group. "We plan to continue providing Macintosh I/O
products that are 100% compatible, industry standard SCSI solutions."

ADDITIONAL FEATURES

Adaptec's PowerDomain 3940UW comes with industry standard PCI-to-PCI
bridging technology that effectively creates a secondary PCI bus on the
SCSI accelerator card that offloads certain I/O functions from the
microprocessor and speeds system performance in multiple array
applications.

Other features include on board flash memory for easy driver upgrades and
support for scatter/gather, disconnect/reconnect and tagged command
queuing. The PowerDomain 3940UW supports 255 simultaneous SCSI commands
and is SCSI Manager 4.3 compliant. Users can also negotiate high-speed
data transfers (Fast, Wide, Ultra) independently with each peripheral
device.

KIT AVAILABILITY AND PRICING

The PowerDomain 3940UW will ship to distribution in March 1996. The kit
includes a PowerDomain 3940UW accelerator and PowerDomain Control software
for system configuration. PowerDomain applications utilities, internal and
external SCSI cables and complete documentation are also included.
Suggested retail price for the complete kit is $549.
