Adobe Systems Ships Adobe FrameMaker+SGML

First Cross-platform Visual SGML Tool Simplifies Authoring and Electronic
Publishing

Mountain View, Calif. (January 16, 1996) (Nasdaq:ADBE)--Adobe Systems
Incorporated today announced the availability of Adobe FrameMaker+SGML
software for the Apple Macintosh/Power Macintosh, Microsoft Windows,
SunOS/Solaris, IBM AIX and Hewlett-Packard HP/UX platforms. Adobe
FrameMaker+SGML is the first integrated authoring and publishing software
that enables users to create, edit and publish SGML (Standard Generalized
Markup Lan-guage) documents in an intuitive WYSIWYG environment.

An International Standards Organization (ISO) standard, SGML makes it
possible to share and reuse the information in documents across software
applications and computing platforms. One of the most widely-recognized
applications of SGML is HTML (Hypertext Markup Language). Based on SGML,
HTML is the standard language used for publishing on the Internet's World
Wide Web. The principal benefits of SGML to business are: information
protection and reusability, accessibility across mixed computing
environments and deliverability via a range of media. SGML is used in
industries as diverse as commercial aviation, telecommunications and
defense by organizations that deal with high-value, complex and frequently
revised documents.

"SGML provides publishers with a standard way of encoding documents so that
they can be displayed on a variety of systems while retaining all the
document's structure and organization," said Mary Laplante, executive
director of SGML Open, the industry consortium of suppliers, including
Adobe Systems, whose products and services support SGML. "Products like
FrameMaker+SGML, with its visual approach to creating and publishing SGML
documents, will have a positive impact on the SGML market because they
make SGML accessible to users."For more information: Peter Card

For Immediate Release

Technical publishing and information systems departments at companies and
government agencies such as Philips, Boeing, Hewlett-Packard and Bell
Northern Research use Adobe's SGML tools to leverage their valuable
corporate data and reduce rising information costs.

"Adobe FrameMaker+SGML software is the first integrated SGML authoring and
publishing environ-ment available across platforms. This is important,
because we create our illustrations on UNIX computers and combine them
with text on Windows-based PCs," said Sal James, of Systems Engineer-ing
Solutions, Inc.'s commercial division, based in Chula Vista, Calif. "And
FrameMaker+SGML's Structure View lets you see how the structure maps to
the document as you add elements to it. It makes creating SGML documents a
much clearer and more straightforward process."

Adobe FrameMaker+SGML

Adobe FrameMaker+SGML is a breakthrough combination of page composition,
text editing, graph-ics, interactive structure validation and visual
support for native SGML in one easy-to-use environ-ment. A fully
documented application programming interface (API) enables application
developers to extend and customize the product.

Adobe FrameMaker+SGML supports the authoring process by providing a
flexible graphical environ-ment. Guided editing helps users follow the
framework of rules for the document specified in the Document Type
Definition (DTD). Adobe FrameMaker+SGML also lets users bypass structural
rules or skip required elements when necessary. This unique approach
allows users to concentrate on the content of their documents rather than
dealing with the complex syntax and technicalities of SGML.

"Our technical publishing customers tell us to expect rapid adoption of
Adobe FrameMaker+SGML because it delivers the benefits of SGML across
platforms, without the learning curve associated with other SGML editors,"
said Lani Hajagos, product marketing manager for Adobe FrameMaker+SGML.
Adobe FrameMaker+SGML software provides a host of features for structured
authoring of business and technical documents, including:

A Structure View which graphically illustrates the elements in a document
and their order and relationship to one another.

* Simple creation of cross-references through selection of the appropriate
element from a scrolling list, which automatically generates SGML ID
attributes when referencing from one element to another.

* Support for structured table handling, including the Department of
Defense's Continuous Acquisi-tion and Life Cycle Support (CALS) table
model and content-tagged table import and export.

* Support for arbitrary DTDs.

* Mapping for ISO public entity sets.

* Hierarchical style definition, which allows document elements to inherit
styles or formatting infor-mation from their ancestors and apply the
appropriate variations to those styles based on the element's context.

* A starter kit for implementing the DocBook DTD for technical
documentation created by the Davenport Group consortium of software
vendors.

* Consistent text and graphics import and export capabilities across all
platforms, allowing users to share information in existing documents.
