CROSS-NETPAGE OVERVIEW

Paging anyone in or out of the office has never been easier. Our goal
is to solve real-time communications problems with split-second
software management tools, noted Thomas B. Cross. NETPAGE is the
latest fast-action tool in the Cross suite of products consisting of
NETTALK, FlyBy and CD-Connect. The focus of NETPAGE and all Cross
products is to solve communications-intensive office problems.

People dont compute, they communicate. The PC is a very powerful
personal communications tool. The PC has been mainly used for the
management of personal files. We need new tools like NETPAGE to
allow people to coordinate easier and be responsive to co-workers and
customers, Cross added. NETPAGE has two major featuresets:

1) OffPC or offLAN (outside the Local Area Network) - this popup
application allows any user to send a note or telephone number to any
TAP compatible pager. The user is able to select telephone numbers
from a database or telephone directory, select a custom or canned
message (i.e., call the office, call home, etc.), dial (supports COM-1-4
and interrupt14), connect, send data, and disconnect. Each page will
be date/time stamped and logged in a log file which can be printed.

1) OnLAN (inside your office on the Local Area Network) - this
application allows anyone to send up to two lines (about 70 characters
per line) of text that will appear in the center portion of all users screens
(user configurable including do not disturb). The sender can send
normal or urgent priority (color flashing), repeat previous pages, and
send multiple messages tiled (or layered) on the screen, i.e., Fred call
the front desk, Jane you have a call on line 3, Jim your guest is in the
front lobby.

Technical Description:

CROSS-NETPAGE is a Microsoft Windows-ONLY application which
requires 2MB of disk and 4MB RAM for use on standalone personal
computers or on Novell-Netware and NetBios (Artisoft-Lantastic, CBIS-
Desk-to-Desk, Performance Technology-PowerLAN) personal computer
local area networks (LANs). OffLAN beeper paging requires the wireless
paging service to support the TAP industry protocol.

INSTALLATION

1) Turn on your IBM-compatible personal computer (PC) with
Microsoft Windows software.

STANDALONE VERSION - For the standalone version of
NETPAGE, from DOS start Windows by typing WIN then press
the ENTER key.

Then insert the NETPAGE disk into your floppy drive. After
Windows is operating, use your mouse to move your cursor to
the Windows menu bar and click on the FILE option, then move
your cursor to the RUN option and click on it, then type A:SETUP
or B:SETUP depending on which floppy drive you have inserted
the NETPAGE disk, press the ENTER key on your computer
keyboard. This will start the installation process for NETPAGE. It
will only take about 3 minutes to install the software on your
personal computer(PC).

LAN VERSION INSTALLATION - Login to your LAN before
starting Windows. You will need to install NETPAGE on a LAN
network drive, i.e., a drive accessible by all users with read/write
access rights (see your LAN manager or dealer if you need help).
Do NOT install NETPAGE on you your local hard drive (i.e., C:)

SUPERVISOR INSTALLATION - Insert the NETPAGE disk into your
floppy drive. After Windows is operating, use your mouse to
move your cursor to the Windows menu bar and click on the FILE
option, then move your cursor to the RUN option and click on it,
then type the words A:SETUP or B:SETUP depending on which
floppy drive you have inserted the NETPAGE disk, then press the
ENTER key on your computer keyboard. This will start the
installation process for NETPAGE. It will take about 3 minutes to
install the software on your local area network (LAN).

INSTALLING ADDITIONAL PCs ON THE LAN - Login to a
different PC on the LAN (with a different login name). Start
Windows. After Windows is operating, use your mouse to move
your cursor to the Windows menu bar and click on the FILE
option, then move your cursor to the RUN option and click on it,
then type the words H:\NETPAGE\SETUP.EXE. NOTE: H is the
LAN network drive where you have installed NETPAGE. That is,
if you first installed NETPAGE on G:\NETPAGE, then each
additional PC would install NETPAGE by running FILE, then RUN,
the G:\NETPAGE\SETUP.EXE.

Please note that each additional user must have READ/WRITE
access privileges to this directory. Please note that with Novell
networks, subdirectories (i.e., F:\public\netpage) do not
necessarily have the same privileges as the main subdirectory
(i.e., F:\public). Please check with the LAN manager or your
LAN/computer dealer for details.

MENU & USER MANAGEMENT OPTIONS

To select NETPAGE management options, move your cursor to
the top of the screen and click on:

FILE MENU

CLOSE will keep NETPAGE running while you are using other
Windows applications. It is highly recommended you select this
option rather than exiting NETPAGE to ensure you get your
onLAN pages.

EXIT will stop NETPAGE from operating. It is recommended but
not required that you exit NETPAGE before leaving Windows.

COMMUNICATION MENU

HANGUP PHONE - This menu option was added just in case the
modem did not automatically hangup the telephone after
completing an offLAN page.

OPTIONS MENU

PREFERENCES. Here you will see a number of different options.
To change any of the PREFERENCES, move your cursor to the
field and click. Then you can change the information in the field.
Please click on the OK button to save your selections or click on
the CANCEL button to not save any changes.

PAGER PHONE - is the default telephone number to the TAP
compatible wireless beeper paging service.

DIALING PREFIX - is a 1 or other number that you may need to
dial the number such as 9 or 91 for your PBX/CENTREX
system.

DIALING SUFFIX - is a number to put after the number dialed.
This is sometimes used for telephone call accounting systems to
track the user.

NETPAGE DIR - is the directory on your PC or LAN where the
NETPAGE files are contained.

PAGER SIGNATURE - is the place where you can put a name or
cordiality, i.e., Thanks, Rod, Thanks for your order, or XYZ
Company. This message or signature will automatically be sent
with each offLAN page.

LAN USER NAME - is the name that NETPAGE will use as the
default name for onLAN pages from you.

MODEM INIT - is your modem initialization string. A default
modem string is listed, however, you can change this depending
on your modem. Please refer to your modem manual for more
details. NOTE: It is impossible to test NETPAGE with all the
myriad of modems available, so please understand that we have
listed a command string that works with most modems. If
offLAN paging does not work, please insure that your paging
service supports the TAP industry standard paging protocol.

COM PORT - NETPAGE offers user setup options such as the
ability to change the COM (modem COMmunications) port or to
have the PAGE button always on top of your applications. You
can select communications ports on your personal computer from
COM1-4. INT14 support is provided for those of you with LAN
modem sharing software (not included with NETPAGE). Enter the
COM port you want to use. Please note that in the Windows
Control Panel (generally in the Main Windows Menu), you should
check the Ports to ensure that your COM port is properly
configured.

BAUD - is the default modem speed for offLAN paging. NOTE:
Beeper paging services only require 300 or 1200 baud to operate.
If you have a high speed modem such as a 9,600, 14,400 or
faster bits per second, offLAN paging may not work until you set
your modem to a SLOWER speed. NETPAGE only allows 300 or
1200 BPS.

MAX PAGE CHARS - is the maximum number of characters or
message length used for offLAN paging. This is generally
restricted by the wireless beeper paging service, NETPAGE has
no influence on their systems.

MAX LAN CHARS - is the maximum number of characters or
messaging length used for onLAN paging. There is no limit as to
the length of your onLAN message, however, ONLY the first two
lines of the message will be displayed.

LAN PAGE DISPLAY TIME - is the amount of time that the onLAN
page will be displayed on the LAN users PC. This is user
definable. That means if you want the onLAN pages to be very
short and not nag the user, then set the display time to 5
seconds. If you want the message to be there for a long time or
until the user HIT the ESC button or clicks on the OK button with
their mouse, then set the display time to 120 seconds.

MAX LOG ENTRIES - is the maximum number of log entries
before they are automatically deleted from NETPAGE. The
current version of NETPAGE does not support archiving of log
entries forever. It may be added later depending on customer
feedback.

INT 14 Modem Comm - is the interface which allows the user to
access a modem NOT on their PC but anywhere on the LAN.
However, since NONE of the LAN networking operating system
software companies provide modem sharing as one of the built-in
features, you must, for now, buy a separate software or
hardware system that supports INT 14. If you need modem
sharing software for your LAN which allows users access to the
modem from anywhere on the LAN, please call Smith Micro at 1-
800-964-7674 and ask for CROSSCONNECT modem sharing
software. We also encourage you to contact your local LAN
dealer or Novell at 1-800-453-1267 for various modem sharing
options for your LAN.

DIRECT CONNECT (tm) - is a feature provided exclusively for high
volume Mobile Media customers. Please contact Mobile Media at
1800-332-8832 or FAX 1-410-720-1101 for more details.

Please click on the OK button to save your selections or click on
the CANCEL button to not save any changes.
ALWAYS ON TOP OPTION - In NETPAGE setup, you can select
the ALWAYS ON TOP button which means that there is a PAGE
button which appears on your screen in whatever application(s)
program you are running. This is a convenient feature for those
who do a lot of paging. You can always get to NETPAGE by
pressing the ALT button then the TAB button to change from one
Windows application to another. That is, if you have a number of
applications running or operating at the same time, you can press
the ALT button and then the TAB button again and again until
you see the NETPAGE program on your screen. Then let go of
both of these buttons and you are in NETPAGE or the program of
your choice.

DO NOT DISTURB - will turn off any onLAN pages coming to you.

HELP MENU

Online HELP is available for most NETPAGE functions.

NETPAGE- HELP & TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

NETPAGE works ONLY IN Microsoft WINDOWS software on IBM-
compatible personal computers and requires Novell IPX (version 3.11) or
NETBIOS for Artisoft-Lantastic, CBIS-Desk-to-Desk, IBM-LanServer,
Performance Technology-PowerLAN and other NETBIOS networks.
OffLAN beep paging requires that the paging service support the TAP
industry protocol. Please contact your paging service if you have any
questions regarding TAP.

Screen Savers - NETPAGE (Windows) will NOT popup over screen
savers, however, if your screen saver is password protected, NETPAGE
will beep once (depending on your screen saver) and force your screen
saver to popup the password box. Put your password in to get your
NETPAGE message.

Error Messages - NETPAGE was unable to find your network drivers.
          - You must be running LAN network software to run NETPAGE.
          - To find out your IPX.COM version, type IPX I
IPX.COM should be 3.10 or newer (1992 or newer).
          - To find out your IPXODI version, type "IPXODI".
          - IPXODI should be (check with your dealer) 1992 or newer.
	Please call Novell Customer Satisfaction
at 1-800-453-1267 or 1-800-NETWARE for help.
You can also download new drivers from CompuServe,
	by going to GO NOVLIB.

In addition, we will try to keep current Novell drivers on the
CROSS+FIRE bulletin board system via modem at 303-442-2616.

NOVELL NETWORK ISSUES

This information is included because there are Novell and Artisoft LAN
managers who are unfamiliar with Novell and Artisoft management
features. This information (based on Novell 3.11) may change without
notice, please contact Novell at 1-800-453-1267 for possible changes
to this information.
To add a user to a Novell 3.11 Network, please:
Login as Supervisor

NOVELL USER RIGHTS - ALL USERS

As the Novell LAN Manager, you need to give users rights to the
NETPAGE directory where you have placed NETPAGE because each
person using NETPAGE needs writes access to record pagers in the
NETPAGE Page Log. If you do not know how to give RIGHTS, you can
start by typing RIGHTS from wherever you have placed NETPAGE. This
will tell you what RIGHTS you have. This will NOT tell you what
RIGHTS other users have.

In order to add RIGHTS to your Novell Network, you login as
SUPERVISOR and type SYSCON,
Then Select - Group Information
Then Select - Group Names - Everyone
Then Select - Trustee Directory Assignments
Then press the INSERT button
Type SYS:Intercom
Press the Enter button
Then press the INSERT button - Select Create
Press the Enter button
Then press the INSERT button - Select Erase
Press the Enter button
Then press the INSERT button - Select Modify
Press the Enter button
Then press the INSERT button - Select Write
Press the Enter button
Then press the INSERT button - Select Access Control
Then press the ESC button a number of times to quit SYSCON.
NOTE: You should then restart or reboot your PCs.
We always recommend that you seek the assistance of a professional
CNE or LAN consultant. Please call us if you need one near you.

NETBIOS SHARING VIOLATION ERROR APPEARS

If you encounter sharing violations (which may appear mostly in
NETBIOS networks) when using NETPAGE for Windows, the .EXE and
.DLL file attributes must be flagged to read-only. To do this, have all
users exit NETPAGE for Windows (by closing the icon). The read-only
attributes can then be set either in Windows File Manager or in DOS.

To set the attributes in Windows File Manager, bring up File Manager
and switch to the NETPAGE installation directory. Now click on 'File'
and select 'Select Files...' At the file name entry box, type *.EXE and
press Enter or click on 'Select'. Now back at the file name entry, type
*.DLL, press Enter or click on 'Select', and then click on 'Close'. Now
click on 'File' again and select 'Properties...'

Click the 'Read Only' box so it has a check or X in it. The boxes
'Hidden' and 'System' should be unchecked. Now press Enter or click
on 'OK'.

To set the attribute in DOS, change the current directory to the
NETPAGE installation directory. Now type ATTRIB +R *.EXE (enter).
Then type ATTRIB +R *.DLL (enter).

Please note that you should change ONLY the .EXE and .DLL files. If
you change all the files, you will be unable to read Page Log files. The
read-only attribute should now allow multi-user execution within
Windows.
For WINDOWS users on Artisoft Lantastic Networks:
Before running NETPAGE, go into Windows Setup via the Windows
Control Panel. Then FOR NETWORK TYPE Select Artisoft Lantastic
(NETPAGE does not work on 3.x or 4.x). You will need the Windows
disks 1 or 2 to perform this task.

RUNNING DOS APPLICATIONS IN WINDOWS (PIF EDITOR)

When DOS applications are run directly from Windows, they take
exclusive control of the CPU, preventing Windows applications
(including NETPAGE) from running. As a result, NETPAGE phone
messages are not received until the DOS application is exited.

Please refer to your Microsoft Windows documentation for any recent
changes. This problem can be solved by creating a PIF (Program
Information File) for the DOS application, and running the DOS
application through the PIF rather than directly. The following steps
explain how a PIF can be created for DOS applications being used in
conjunction with NETPAGE for Windows.

1.	From the Main program group, double click on the PIF Editor icon to
run the PIF editor.
2.	Enter the full path of the filename to execute in the Program
Filename field (ex: C:\APP\MYAPP.EXE). If your program is run
through a batch file, the path to the batch file should be entered
here (ex: C:\BATCH\MYBAT.BAT).
3.	Enter any command-line parameters in the Optional Parameters field
(ex: /USER=David).
4.	Enter the application's directory under the Start-up Directory field.
This is similar to the Working Directory field of an icon's Program
Item Properties under the Windows Program Manager.
5.	Make sure that the Execution: Exclusive check box is not checked. If
it is checked, uncheck it. Exclusive execution will prevent NETPAGE
from running while the DOS application is executing.
6.	From the File menu, choose Save As... and choose a meaningful
name for the PIF file (ex: MYAPP.PIF).
7.	Exit the PIF editor by choosing Exit from the File menu.
8.	Create a new program icon by choosing New from the Program
Manager File menu. Select Program Item and click Ok.
9.	Enter a meaningful name (ex: My Application) in the Description
field.
10.	Under the Command Line field, enter the name of the PIF file you
created (ex: MYAPP.PIF). This will run the PIF file when the program
icon is selected.
11.	Click the Ok button. Your application can now be run through the
PIF file.

Please refer to your DOS, Windows, and LAN Network manuals for help
and guidance as well as your local LAN computer dealer or consultant.
