NetWare for Macintosh 3.011

ABSTRACT:

This is AFPFIX7.NLM, which should only be used with NetWare for Macintosh
v3.011. This file addresses the problem of a NetWare v3.11 server and the Mac
workstation hanging when an open application/file is either moved or deleted
by a Macintosh.

SYMPTOM

There are two symptoms relating to this problem:

     1. Some applications, like MacroMind Director, will fail to save files
to the NetWare volume, reporting disk problems. In other words, the
working file is being left open. This often happens after a file
has been edited and saved more than once during a single AFP
session. This symptom has been confirmed with Directory, but other
applications may also experience this problem.

     2. If an open file is moved, renamed, or trashed the following FATAL
          problems will occur:
     a. All the AFP sessions (for that file server) will hang.
     b. Eventually, ALL the sessions on that file server may hang.
     c. If the user tries to unload an NLM (i.e. AFP.NLM), the server
          console will hang.
     d. Eventually the server may crash.

CAUSE

The first problem occurring is that the NetWare v3.11 Operating System is
denying the closure of some files even when the parent application
requests that they be closed. Secondly, the server is hanging and or
crashing when users try to manipulate these open files. In short, if the
user tries to manipulate (move, rename, or delete) open files (left open
by the server) the Operating System gets stuck on one process and doesn't
     allow other processes to run.

SOLUTION

While this patch does not fix the problem of the Operating System leaving
files open, it does prevent the user from manipulating the open files by
displaying a message informing them that they don't have enough rights to
move or delete the particular application or file. It is important to
note that this patch should only be used with NetWare for Macintosh
     v3.011.
