SUBJECT:Use Of Expanded Memory With WordPerfect 5.1

The following is information concerning the use of expanded memory with WordPerfect 5.1.

1) How will 5.1's memory requirements be reduced by using expanded memory?

The actual conventional memory requirements will not be reduced by using expanded memory with 5.1; however, 5.1 will swap anything and everything possible out to expanded memory with the exception of the WP.exe which cannot be executed in expanded memory.

2) How much expanded memory can 5.1 access?

Unlike WordPerfect 5.0's limitation of 1.5 meg of expanded memory, 5.1 can access as much expanded memory as there is available.

3) How many documents can WordPerfect have open at one time?

WordPerfect 5.0 could have up to 3 documents open at one time; however the customer is only allowed to work in 2 documents. 5.1 can have as many documents as necessary open at one time. The limitation of 2 documents open by the customer is still true in 5.1.

4) What is the minimum workspace that can be designated using the /W switch?

The minimum is 53k

5) How much available expanded memory is necessary for WP 5.1 to utilize the expanded memory without specifying /r?

550k available.

6) What versions of LIM do we support with 5.1?

3.2 LIM or higher is needed.

7) Is there anything that can't be loaded into expanded memory in 5.1?

The only thing that cannot be loaded into expanded memory in 5.1 is WP.exe. It cannot be executed from expanded memory.

8) How does 5.1 recognize expanded memory?

5.1 recognizes expanded memory automatically and will load everything possible into it; however, if the /R switch isn't used, WP.fil won't be loaded into expanded and remains on disk. Since this file contains all WP's overlays, WordPerfect will still have to read the disk frequently for information from this file which will slow things down considerably. In order to utilize expanded memory in the most effective way, the /R switch is strongly recommended.

9) Will document edit buffers ever be loaded into expanded memory?

WordPerfect will only load the document edit buffers into expanded memory if there are two 64k page frames available in expanded. This must be available, WP won't swap anything out of expanded to make this space available.

10) What happens if, for example, I have 5 meg of expanded memory available,
and I retrieve an 8 meg document?

WordPerfect will load what it can into expanded memory. When memory is exceeded, we overflow to virtuals. In order to speed things up, we'll swap the virtual files back and forth from expanded to disk. When expanded is exceeded, we go to disk and when disk space reaches its limit, we'll swap back to expanded.
