TCI AWARDS MULTIMILLION DOLLAR CONTRACT TO SYBASE FOR NEW GENERATION OF
BUSINESS SERVICES

SYBASE System 10 to be Used for Customer Service Data Network

ENGLEWOOD, CO, April 7, 1994 -- Sybase, The Enterprise Client/Server
Company, today announced that Tele-Communication, Inc. (TCI) has chosen
SYBASE client/server technology for its Customer Service Data Network, a
new internal information service designed to provide high-speed
information processing to support digital compression, new programming,
and customer service. SYBASE products will be instrumental in running the
new network, a very large, on-line transaction processing and decision
support system for managing customer subscriptions and billing
transactions. Sybase's client/server architecture will allow TCI to
introduce a new generation of business services that improves
communication both internally at TCI, and to suppliers and customers.

Sadie Decker, vice president of advanced information technology at TCI,
said, "We are excited to have Sybase as a strategic partner in
establishing the software systems for the Customer Service Data Network.
Using SYBASE technology and services will allow us to set a new standard
for communicating with our customers and provide them with the most
responsive service system available today."

"TCI's new Digital Compression Center is key to turning the concept of the
information highway into a reality. The Customer Service Data Network is
an example of how client/server technology will be applied to service the
information highway," said Mark Hoffman, Sybase president and CEO. "Sybase
pioneered client/server computing, which has enabled organizations to
distribute on-line information across the organization and beyond to
customers and suppliers. We are proud to provide technology that supports
TCI's initiative."

Global Customer Service Data Network

According to Decker, TCI's objective is to provide a comprehensive network
achieving the best customer service system on the market today. With the
new system, the Customer Service Data Network will be operational 24 hours
a day, seven days a week. The network is also expected to increase billing
accuracy and enable TCI customers to choose among several payment options.
In addition, the internal system will function as a global communications
tool for TCI employees by providing voice, video conference, data, and
Internet access for TCI operations in the United States and Europe.

Sybase Combines Technology, Consulting

TCI's decision was largely based on two aspects: technology and consulting
services. The superior architecture of Sybase's relational database
management system SYBASE System 10 provides an open and scalable framework
able to support an on-line system of this size. The project will employ
the following Sybase System 10 product family, namely Sybase SQL Server
10, Replication Server, Omni SQL Gateway, Open Client, and Open Server. "A
project of this magnitude requires a data management system that is
reliable and highly scalable," said Decker.

Another important factor in TCI's decision was Sybase's consulting
organization, Worldwide Professional Services (WWPS). WWPS worked closely
with TCI to determine the best solution for the Customer Service Data
Network and then developed an implementation plan that allows both
companies to set and accomplish milestones for implementing the network.
According to Decker, "Both employees and executives have demonstrated
their ability to be true partners in this initiative, and we look forward
to continuing our successful relationship."
