Donate a Scanner, Help Somebody Out

Using low-power monitors and systems isn't the only way to be an
environmentally and politically correct computer user. Save some space in
your local landfill and get a tax deduction in one fell swoop by donating
your old scanners to Arkenstone, a Sunnyvale, California-based nonprofit
organization that offers reading systems for the blind, visually impaired,
and learning disabled.

To DOS-based PCs, Arkenstone adds scanning, optical character recognition,
and speech synthesis capabilities that allow text to be scanned in and
read back to a listener. New systems typically cost about $5,000, but
through its First Reader program, Arkenstone is reconditioning second-hand
hardware to offer systems for less than $1,500. The organization needs
functional IBM PC-compatible scanners, especially Hewlett-Packard models.
A receipt for tax-deduction purposes will be provided for donations. For
more information, contact D.J. Connell at Arkenstone at 800-444-4443.
