Unipalm Ships First E-mail Product to Incorporate MIME and Extended MAPI

MAIL-IT Delivers Local Area Network E-mail Functionality Across the Wide
Area by Incorporating Open Standards

CAMBRIDGE, England (March 25, 1994) -- The Unipalm Group plc announced that
MAIL-IT v. 2.0, the first SMTP electronic mail package to incorporate the
emerging messaging standards MIME and Extended MAPI, has begun shipping to
customers worldwide. MAIL-IT offers users the breadth of wide area
messaging along with the ease-of-use of the Windows interface. Based on
open systems, MAIL-IT combines and extends the E-mail messaging function
beyond the immediate enterprise and enables users to send virtually any
type of message to Internet hosts worldwide.

MAIL-IT supports a direct link to the Internet through TCP/IP, eliminating
the need for functionally-limiting and costly gateway technology
necessary with connecting proprietary mail solutions. Essential to the
product's broad functionality are the two new messaging standards MIME
and MAPI. MIME (Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) enables files of
any length and complexity to be sent over an SMTP backbone and the
Internet, including graphics, spreadsheets, formatted documents,
multimedia, audio and video. MAPI (Microsoft's Messaging Application
Programming Interface) Internet-enables desktop applications, allowing
documents or files to be E-mailed directly over the Internet from any
MAPI-compliant desktop application, simply by selecting "Send" from the
application's pull-down File menu. Current MAPI-compliant applications
include Word for Windows, WordPerfect, Excel and JetForms.

By incorporating Extended MAPI, MAIL-IT allows a modular "plug and play"
approach and flexible upgrade path to new MAPI services. For example, a
LAN-based system access or internally-developed corporate address server
or X.500 service provider can be added.

With an intuitive Windows MDI interface, users can easily 'drag and drop'
their messages into particular hierarchical folders, compose and view
multiple messages, reply, forward, send, print, save and delete
messages, attach files from other applications, select deferred mail
delivery, prioritize outgoing mail, and set confirmation of read and
delivery.

Message formats can be Standard Internet (RFC 822) or MIME (RFC 1521), and
the mail transports used are SMTP (RFC 821) for sending and POP2 (RFC
937) / POP3 (RFC 1225) for receiving.

MAIL-IT requires Windows 3.1 or higher, any WinSock compliant TCP/IP
networking protocol, a mailhost running SMTP/POP and 3MB free disk space
to store MAIL-IT and messages.

Unipalm's MAIL-IT is currently available worldwide for a list price of
USD150 / GBP99 for a single copy or USD700 / GBP450 for a five-user  pack;
site licenses and educational discounts are also available. 30-day
evaluation copies will be available for ftp from April 5th. Contact
Unipalm directly for further information, including local distributors.
