THE JOCKEY CLUB SELECTS SYBASE

SYBASE Software and Consulting Key to Restructuring Operations of Worldwide
Horsebreeding, Racing Data Supplier

EMERYVILLE, CA, March 30, 1994 -- Sybase, Inc., The Enterprise
Client/Server Company, today announced that The Jockey Club has selected
Sybase to provide software and consulting services for restructuring its
computer operations into an integrated corporate information system. The
new system is part of a larger effort to re-engineer the business
processes of the century-old North American data supplier for the
Thoroughbred horsebreeding and racing industry. It will be used to manage
information on more than 2 million Thoroughbred horses.

At the heart of The Jockey Club's information system will be two
20-gigabyte, mirrored SQL Server databases, running on a single
Hewlett-Packard HP 9000, Model T500 symmetric multiprocessing system. Five
HP application servers will be linked to the main server via 100-megabit
FDDI fiber optic cable to support the rapid exchange of information. In
turn, these HP systems will tie together some 100 Intel-based workstations
via 10Base-T Ethernet. The client/server system will replace The Jockey
Club's existing IBM 3081 mainframe and OS/2 database running on an IBM
Personal System/2-based LAN, which are not integrated. According to The
Jockey Club, a critical factor in choosing Sybase as the client/server
software supplier for this system was Sybase's commitment to supporting
the organization.

"Our measure in choosing a supplier was how much a given company was
willing to do to ensure our success," said Nick D'Altilio, director of MIS
for The Jockey Club. "We went to Sybase and basically said, 'Tell us how
you would solve the problem.' We were impressed with Sybase's
responsiveness and well-researched recommendations to address our
requirements." Adds D'Altilio, "We've been extremely pleased with our
choice.

Jockey Club Restructures to Reflect Business

The traditional core of The Jockey Club's business is maintenance of the
American Stud Book, the official pedigree registery of all Thoroughbreds
in the U.S. and Canada. The company also maintains a database of this
information on its mainframe, which is made available to breeders, owners,
and specialized publications such as The Blood-Horse, through its
for-profit subsidiary, The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. Three
years ago, the company added a new service, Equibase, an OS/2 database to
provide on-line, up-to-date Thoroughbred racing information.

The Jockey Club determined that linking information on the two computer
systems was cost prohibitive. At the same time, there was no business
structure to support coordination among its IS professionals for these
different services. As a result, The Jockey Club has been restricted in
its ability to interrelate much valuable performance and pedigree data as
a service to its customers.

The Jockey Club has turned to Sybase's Professional Services group to
assist in restructuring the IS organization and information management
systems to bring them all into a highly coordinated operation. Taking a
high-level approach, The Jockey Club and Sybase's Professional Services
group have developed an enterprise data model that identifies the
fundamental business requirements the new system will need to support. A
data model that identifies the functional specifications is now in
progress. Actual coding is expected to begin in the first quarter of
1994.

"Re-engineering our business process is probably the most dramatic thing
The Jockey Club has done," said D'Altilio. "But we believe it will allow
us to achieve dramatic improvements in the quality of the services we
provide and our ability to do so cost effectively."

"Today, customers need more than isolated technology components. At Sybase,
we are committed to providing the client/server architecture and the
consulting required by customers to successfully implement information
systems that support their critical business operations," said Stu
Schuster, vice president of marketing at Sybase. "We are particularly
pleased at the opportunity to work with The Jockey Club is building an IS
structure with the strength and flexibility to carry their business well
into the next century."
