Dolphin Disk Purge

This software is for purging (writing over and deleting) files on a hard
disk or on a floppy disk and also for purging (writing over) areas of a
disk no longer used by files but which may still contain sensitive
information. It is of particular interest to users of encryption software
because even though all files containing confidential information may be
encrypted, there may still be sectors on a disk which hold information
created when a file was decrypted (or before it was encrypted). Word
processors used to edit files containing sensitive information may also
leave plaintext lying around on the disk in sectors not allocated to
files. A directory listing will give no indication of the existence of
such information, but Dolphin Disk Purge will remove this information
beyond recovery.

This software allows you to purge one or more files in a directory
(wildcards can be used in the file specification), purge files in a
directory and in all subdirectories of that directory, purge the sectors
of a disk that are currently not allocated to files, purge the entire disk
(which removes all information from a disk) or purge selected tracks. If
you run Dolphin Disk Purge periodically to purge all sectors not used by
files you can be sure that a low-level search program will not be able to
recover information that you would not want it to. The program is also
useful when a computer or its hard disk is to be given a new use and all
data resulting from its former use must be removed.

Dolphin Disk Purge has a menu-driven interface that allows you to set up
versatile combinations of purge specifications. The setup is checked for
error conditions before proceeding. When purging files you can specify
that only files with dates in a certain time period will be purged. The
specification of files to be purged can contain wildcards, so it is
possible, for example, to purge all files of the form *.TXT in
/DOCS/PROJECT and in all lower subdirectories with file dates between
1/1/94 and 12/31/94. You can customize the way that the program operates,
such as the number of times it writes over each sector. Data is purged
according to DoD standards: Each sector is overwritten with 1 bits, then
with 0 bits, then random values are used for the subsequent overwrites.

There is a simulation mode which allows you to see how the software will
act during a proposed purge before the operation is actually performed.
The program sends a report of its progress to the screen and optionally
will also output the report to a file or to the printer.

Included in the Dolphin Disk Purge package are three simpler programs which
allow you (i) to purge multiple files in a directory, (ii) to wipe floppy
disks clean of data and (iii) to view the contents of individual disk
sectors.

Dolphin Disk Purge is priced at $145.00, and is available from Dolphin
Software, 48 Shattuck Square #147, Berkeley, CA 94704 (510-464-3009).
