
    INSTALLATION GUIDE FOR OS/2 2.1 256 COLOR BLITTER DRIVER
      FOR THE ORCHID TECHNOLOGY KELVIN 64 VLB & PCI CARDS

IMPORTANT NOTES:
-----------------
1.  These instructions assume you already have OS/2 2.1 installed
and running successfully with your Kelvin using IBM's VGA driver.      

2.  Orchid's Kelvin 64 OS/2 drivers install using IBM's display installer 
program (DSPINSTL.EXE).  DSPINSTL.EXE calls IBM's SVGA.EXE program to 
try to identify the SVGA chipset active in your system before proceeding 
with the installation of a display driver.  The IBM SVGA.EXE shipped
with OS/2 2.1 does not correctly identify the Cirrus Logic chip
used on the Kelvin 64.  Running the CLINST21.CMD (supplied with our 
drivers) will update your SVGA.EXE with a new Cirrus Logic version of
SVGA.EXE before calling DSPINSTL.EXE.  This will help OS/2 correctly 
identify the Kelvin's Cirrus Logic chipset. 

3.  If you for some reason you have trouble running CLINST21.CMD, 
you can manually rename the IBM SVGA.EXE file to SVGA.IBM, and
then copy the new Kelvin SVGA.EXE file to your OS/2 subdirectory.  
You can read more about the SVGA.EXE file in your OS/2 Users Manual
on page 339.

4.  When you're running CLINST21.EXE, you may get a message that 
the "target file" has a newer date than the "source file".  
If that message comes up, select the "YES" button to continue 
with installation.



INSTALL OPTION 1
--------------------------------
Installing from your hard drive:
--------------------------------
1. Open an OS/2 command prompt session, windowed or full screen. 

2. Change directories to DISP_1  (See the README.1ST file for more
   details on creating this directory, and copying the driver files
   to it.)

3. Run the CLINST21.CMD, using the following option:

   CLINST21 C        
   
   (If your OS/2 directory is not on drive C, then please substitute 
   the appropriate drive letter.)

4. If step 3 seemed to complete normally, proceed with these 
   instructions.  Otherwise, see Notes 3 and 4 at the top of this 
   file regarding problems with CLINST21 and possible workarounds.
    
5. When CLINST21.CMD runs successfully, it will automatically invoke 
   DSPINSTL.EXE.  When the opening dialog box for DSPINSTL comes up, 
   check the "Primary Display" check box. 

6. Select "Cirrus Logic 543x Blitter Driver" from the "Display Driver 
   Install" dialog box.

7. The "MONITOR CONFIGURATION/SELECTION UTILITY" dialog box will appear. 
   The choice "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" option should be   
   selected.  Click "OK" for default monitor settings.  See the notes at
   the end of this file if you would like more information about 
   monitor configuration.

8. Select the resolution you want from the SELECT DISPLAY RESOLUTION
   list box.

9. Click the "Install" button in the "SOURCE DIRECTORY" dialog box and 
   follow the prompts.

10. When you've finished setting up the new driver, you will be 
    prompted to do a system shutdown.  Once you reboot, you should
    be running the Kelvin driver.

11. If you want to change the resolution, simply open an OS/2 command
    prompt session, and run DSPINSTL.EXE, and follow steps 5 through
    10 again.



INSTALL OPTION 2
--------------------------------
Installing from floppy diskette:
--------------------------------
1. Open an OS/2 command prompt session, full screen or windowed.

2. Insert the Kelvin OS/2 driver disk (see README.1ST for more details
   on creating that diskette) into one of your floppy drives.
   Double check that the volume label on the floppy driver disk is 
   DISP 1  You can see the volume label by using giving the commands
   "VOL A:"  or "DIR A:", substituting the drive letter if necessary.
   If the volume label isn't correct, see the README.1ST file for more 
   details on how to set the volume label.

3. Logon to the floppy drive that contains the driver disk, and run the
   program CLINST21.CMD  by typing in:   CLSINST21 C     

   (If your OS/2 directory is not on "C", then substitute the 
    appropriate drive letter.)


4. If step 3 seemed to complete normally, proceed with these 
   instructions.  Otherwise, see Notes 3 and 4 at the top of this 
   file regarding problems with CLINST21 and possible workarounds.

5. When CLINST21.CMD successfully copies over the SVGA.EXE file, it
   will automatically invoke DSPINSTL.EXE.  When the opening dialog box 
   comes up for DSPINSTL, check the "Primary Display" check box. 

6. Select Cirrus Logic Blitter Driver from the PRIMARY DISPLAY ADAPTER TYPE
   dialog box.

7. The "Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility" dialog box will appear. 
   The choice "Install Using Defaults for Monitor Type" option should be   
   selected.  Click "OK" for default monitor settings.  See the notes at
   the end of this file if you would like more information about 
   monitor configuration and refresh rate options.

8. Select the resolution you want from the SELECT DISPLAY RESOLUTION
   list box.

9. Click the "Install" button in the SOURCE DIRECTORY dialog box and follow
   prompts.

10. When you've finished setting up the new driver, you will be 
    prompted to do a system shutdown.  Once you reboot, you should
    be running the Kelvin driver.

11. If you want to change the resolution, simply open an OS/2 command
    prompt session, and run DSPINSTL.EXE, and follow steps 5 through
    10 again.



MONITOR CONFIGURATION
USING HIGH REFRESH RATES 
-------------------------

The installation process, as described above, sets up for default 
refresh rates of 60Hz at 640x480, 56Hz at 800x600, and 43.5Hz 
(interlaced) at 1024x768.  If you would like to set up your Kelvin 
to use higher refresh rates follow the steps below.

A.  Open an full screen OS/2 command prompt session.

B.  Place your "Kelvin 64 Install Disk" in one of your floppy
    drives.  (This disk ships with your Kelvin board.)

C.  Log on to the floppy drive, and run the program KINSTALL.EXE

D.  When the KINSTALL version screen comes up, press return once
    so you are at the KINSTALL main menu.  

E.  Use your arrow keys to move the highlighted bar down to the
    "Orchid Utilities" choice on the menu.  Then press return.

F.  The utility "KSCAN.EXE" should be highlighted, press return.
    KINSTALL will ask you what drive and directory you would like 
    to copy the KSCAN.EXE file to.  You can accept the default 
    suggestion of "KELVIN", or choose another name.  (These 
    instructions will assume you chose Kelvin as the directory name.)

G.  Once the KSCAN files have been copied to your hard drive, you
    should press the "ESCAPE" key several times, until you've 
    completely exited the KINSTALL program, and are back to the
    OS/2 command prompt.

H.  Follow installation steps 2 through 6 listed above (for either
    floppy or hard disk installation). 

I.  When you come to the "Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility" 
    dialog box, click on the "Install Using Adapter Utility Program" 
    option.  OS/2 will ask you where to find the program, and you
    should type in: 

    C:\KELVIN\KSCAN.EXE   (Substitute drive letters and directory 
                           name if necessary.)

    KSCAN will let you choose the monitor type you want.  If you would
    like more information about running KSCAN, please see your Kelvin
    manual.

J.  Once you have made your choices in KSCAN, and exited the program,
    finish up the driver installation by following steps 8 through 11
    listed above (for either floppy or hard disk installation).

This Kelvin 64 OS/2 2.1 driver release supports the following resolution, 
color, and frequency choices.
