Happy News for all Gravis Ultrasound Owners and DOOMers: Here's how to get FX AND MUSIC (and we're talking native mode-why- would-anyone-ever-buy-another-soundblaster-again-quality-sound): id left out a crucial file in the initial release of DOOM. However, it's a file many of us already have- "ultramid.ini." They renamed it "dmxgus.ini," and it *must* be in your DOOM directory (that is, where the DOOM exectuable is- *not* the DOOMDATA directory on the "c" drive which contains your saved games and configuration file.) With this file in place, you'll get beautiful, scary sounding music. As far as SFX problems go- be sure you are using an interrupt *less* than irq 9. The setup program is quirky about when it will ask you for irq's, etc., so you may have to fool with it. The values in the cfg file are (decimal conversion from hex addrs?) different, so you can't do it directly. (I found that I could get it to ask for irq.'s etc. when I tried changing to a SB and back.) --> Note: the problem for most people is with almost certainly these --> two things: 1) No dmxgus.ini (it isn't being distributed with the game, yet.), and 2) "Setgus" defaults to IRQ 11 for GUS, and DOOM supports no higher than 9. So you probably have your irq set for 11. You must change this. OK. Where to find "dmxgus.ini," or "ultramid.ini" (which you'll have to rename): On CompueServe- I've uploaded it to the GAMERS FORUM arcade/action library section, and also to the PC VENDOR B Advanced Gravis library section. If you've previously gotten the Miles drivers (AIL/DIGPACK) from somewhere, you already have "ultramid.ini." Put it in your DOOM subdirectory, and you're all set. NOTE: I have seen on the INTERNET someone advising people to ALSO run "Ultramid." This IS NOT NECESSARY. OK? We're tired and need it. :) Secondly, to those of you not getting any GUS music, that's because there's one line I commented out of the game and forgot to put back in while debugging it last night. Included at the end of this post is a file to get that to work for you. The file must be named DMXGUS.INI. It's included at the end of this post. Someone please put this on ftp sites when the bandwidth comes back. No one's here tonight except me and I don't know what our account is on AOL, CompuServe, etc., so if someone could upload this file to these places, I'd appreciate it. Stick it in your DOOM directory, and when you run doom, run it from that directory (don't stick c:\doom in your path and run it from somewhere else). When you start up doom with this, you should notice a difference. It'll hit the disk after you see the DMX_Init thing in the DoomOS startup stuff. Thirdly, we're trying to keep up with the net-posted bugs. We're trying to get a SoundBlaster 1.0 to our sound guy so that he can figure out what the deal is (they're not made anymore).
