Icons Control v.4.3 8/17/95 INTRODUCTION ------------ Icons Control is designed to display as many Windows icons as possible in a 10x10 grid. Icons can be copied, renamed, and erased with a click of the mouse. Icons Control can even display icons embedded inside DLL or EXE files. Displayed icons can be edited, converted to bitmaps, or extracted to ICO format (in the DLL or EXE viewing mode.) In addition, 32x32-pixel bitmaps can also be converted to ICO format for use with Windows 3.1. This version offers the ability to convert and extract icons in batch mode, thus saving a considerable amount of time for those of you with large number of icons to process. Furthermore, any portion of the screen can be captured into an icon or bitmap. For a complete description of Icons Control, please refer to the help file accessible by clicking on the Help icon from outside as well as inside the program. INSTALLATION ------------ Run SETUP from the Windows file manager. You will be asked to enter a directory to install Icons Control (default is Icnctrl.) For users who download the Icons Control package from the internet, you may need to download a copy of VBRUN300.DLL from the same site. Since VBRUN300.DLL is about 300K and almost everyone running a Visual Basic application have it, I am not including it in the zip file to save disk space and download time. Users who wish to receive the software on a 3.5" floppy disk will have every files needed (including the VBRUN300.DLL) to run the software. NOTE: During installation, you may run into copying errors such as "COMMDLG.DLL IS IN USE. PLEASE CLOSE ALL APLLICATIONS AND RE-ATTEMPT SETUP". Just click IGNORE and continue. This is because you don't have the file sharing setup properly in your Windows environment. You can avoid these warnings by copying the vshare.386 file into your \windows\system directory and using a text editor to insert the line device=vshare.386 in the [386 Enhanced] section of your system.ini file. Otherwise, the software should run normally withou this modification despite of the warnings. HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS --------------------- * Any computer running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95 (a 386DX or better is recommended.) * A standard VGA (a Windows-accelerated graphic board is recommended.) * A mouse or trackball. * Sound blaster or compatible device (optional) Icons Control has been developed and tested on a 486DX66 with 8MB of RAM, a 1 MB Diamond Stealth 24 Windows accelerator board (at screen resolutions 640x480x16, 640x480x256, 640x480x65536, 800x600x256, 800x600x65536, 1024x768x16, and 1024x768x256) and a trackball and mouse. It has also been tested on a 100 MHz Pentium-based machine with 16 MB of RAM, a 1 MB Diamond Stealth 64 SE (PCI) with the same above settings. NOTE: Icons Control may not run properly on video modes higher than 65,536 colors. If you encounter "OUT OF MEMORY" errors when running Icons Control, I recommend running Windows at a lower color depth. Some of you may confuse between color depth and resolution. Color depth determine the number of colors are available for displaying images (16, 256, 64K, or 16M (24-bit color.) Screen resolution is the number of pixels available on screen (640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, or 1280x1024.) REGISTRATION ------------ Icons Control is both freeware and shareware. Freeware users are free to use it to view, copy, mode, delete, and rename icons. Icons Control even displays icons embedded inside DLL and EXE files. The displayed icons cannot be extracted, edited, or converted. The extraction, editing, and conversion functions are only available in the registered versions (shareware.) There is no evaluation period to use Icons Control. You may use it as long as you want. But in order to use the above-mentioned functions, you must register to obtain the registered version. PAYMENT TERMS ------------- Registration is $25. Registered users will receive the most recent version through internet email (uuencoded.) If you prefer to receive the software on a 3.5" floppy disk, the fee is $29. Please send your check or money order to: Chris Doan 4891 Clairemont Mesa Blvd., #401 San Diego, CA 92117 A single user license permits a user to use Icons Control only on a single computer. Licensed users may use the program on different computers as long as there is no possibility of it being used at one location while it is being used at another, or on a network by more than one user at a time. Thank you for supporting the shareware software concept and encouraging the future development of Windows shareware!
