Santa Maria della SaluteThis imposing baroque church sits on the tip of the Dorsoduro, filling the horizon across the Grand Canal from piazzetta San Marco. The church was built as an offering of thanks for the deliverance of Venice from the 1630 plague. Its highly centralized and octagonal shape can be enjoyed best from inside. Here Palladian grey stone on white stucco softens the Baroque, while the design of the pavement and the Gothic altarpiece infuse the church with warmth. In the sacristy, you discover Titian's daringly foreshortened ceiling frescoes of Old Testament scenes (note Cain Killing Abel) as well as his altarpiece, San Marco Enthroned. On another wall is Tintoretto's dynamic Marriage at Cana.
