Palazzo StrozziThe aristocratic Strozzi family was exiled from Florence by the Medici in 1434, but when wealthy banker Filippo Stozzi returned to Florence in 1466, he determined to build the largest palazzo ever, thereby eclipsing his rivals. Fifteen smaller buildings were demolished to make room for his grand palace; although it is strictly speaking only three stories tall, each floor is as tall as most palazzi. Strozzi died before the building was completed, and, in fact, it wasn't completed until 1536. This grandiose structure, with its rustic stone façade, is extremely impressive; it now houses a number of scholarly institutes and the Piccolo Museo di Palazzo Strozzi, which explains the building's history.
