Santa Maria del CarmineMuch of the church of Santa Maria del Carmine burned in the 18th century and was rebuilt. Fortunately, the fire left for posterity the Brancacci Chapel in the right transept, where you find the Masaccio and Masolino fresco cycle on the Life of St. Peter (1425). These overpowering works are arguably the most important paintings of the early Renaissance; Michelangelo, Fra Angelico, and other great painters came to study these frescoes, rich in perspective and the use of color, light, and shade to create convincing human dramas. To protect the recently restored frescoes, visits are controlled and entrance permitted to a limited number at any one time. Arrive early in peak season.
