HOUSTON, TX: NEW AREA CODE DATA

Area Code 281 is a new NPA which was introduced in the Houston metro area of Texas on March 1, 1995. It "overlays" the 713 NPA, which means that both area codes will cover the same geographical area. Most telephone users will probably not be much affected by this new area code at first, since for the first year only wireless customers will be assigned to the 281 NPA, and no existing 713 wireline numbers will be changed.

After March 1, 1996, however, all new Houston numbers will be assigned to the new 281 area code, and all 713/281 customers will have to dial 10 digits for local calls.

Therefore, PBX and dialer users should add 281 to their NPA routing lists.

Test number: (281) 792-8378 gives recording if successfully dialed.
