Changing list --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 4 Dec 95 15:32:18 JST From: r_smith@Koyosha.CO.JP (HirokoTakeda) Subject: japan tour Hello all. I saw the charlatans 5 times last week. in 1992, their gigs in Japan were sometime neatly empty. but this time almost sold-out tour and every venue were full of people. 1) 28th of Nov. Tokyo the concert was great as always. I could go to thier backstage after the show. as soon as Tim saw me, he said "I'm tired." to me. I asked him about his green tongue (NME reported) and he said "it's still green" and showed me his tongue, but it seemed normal to me. then he lay down on a sofa. all of the members seemed to tired. very quiet. 2)29th of Nov. Tokyo the concert was so exellent. far better than yesterday. the members looked very well. when I went to the backstage, Tim said " tell me tell me which concert better, yesterday? or today?? " and I said of course "today" I added " happy to hear Happen to..." instead of me he added " Happen to die". they didn't play Happen to die yesterday. I talk with Tim for a while luckily. 3)30th of Nov. Osaka the concert was the worst concert of all the charlies gigs I've ever seen. they had no attention to play here. the opening act was the blutones. when I saw them before, they played about 30 min. and it was a nice show. but this time they played full 60 min. and I was satiated by their play though the first 20min. were nice. 4)1st of Dec. Nagoya better than yesterday but not so exellent. 5)2nd of Dec. Tokyo the allnighter djs and the bluetones and the charlatans. I was very tired while djs playing kind of house music. and the blutones, better than Osaka. and finally, the charlatans. it was the best gig. great songs and energetic play. I was so happy to stay there. in daytime, they held an instore event at HMV(sinjyuku). too many people came to see them, so it went very confusing party. anyway, thier tour was very hard. they leaved japan at noon 3rd of Dec. hope they come back to japan with more time. ********: hiro :********* ------------------------- Date: Mon, 4 Dec 95 16:24:01 JST From: r_smith@Koyosha.CO.JP (HirokoTakeda) Subject: 10 more bands? can I add more 10 bands? top 10 bands .the stone roses .puressense .radiohead .the cure .oasis and I miss .Jellyfish .senseless things .ned's atomic dustbin .the verve why so many bands that I liked breakup?????? top 10 albums .the stone roses - 1st .Jellyfish - Bellybuttom .The Cure - Disintegration That's not enough. there's too many bands and albums. could you tell me about 311, Lee W. I had high hopes after the hearing Rollercaster as well but they sound like a band who've got the tunes bot not the musicians. On a completely different point has anyone seen the Charlies do Bullet Comes live as its a personal favourite but Ive never seen them sing it and secondly, does anyone have any guitar chords or tablature for Charlatans songs? If so it would be more than just gratefully received. Cheers. HA! hardly. pearl jam's ten was still in the top 100 when they released vitalogy. as if they didn't know that with their david geffen style marketing that every teenie bopper in the u.s wouldn't be wetting their beds to get a copy. it didn't matter they could've had a 45 minute recording of eddy vedder blowing his nose and the kids would have fell for it. you wanna talk about risk. try recording with a new producer (ie: between 10th and 11th), try recording an album while your hammond player is in the slammer. the fact that the charlatans even made it over to north america in 1994 was incredible. even the british press weren't raving about up to our hips (except for may be a few catchy songs they liked such as jesus hairdo and can't get out of bed). this was a low for them. but they still had the guts to come to north america when pearl jam was doing it's thing and people still wouldn't let cobain rest in peace. the charlatans have never been a band to chase the american dollar like some bands. they do what ever they do and it's good. their style has changed somewhat. but they don't go off releasing some useless record with a fancy leather looking cover and say hey every american kid who wants to be cool buy this record. > I'm not saying I like Pearl Jam more than them, for your sake i hope not. you're posting this to the charlatans mailing list! but I'm willing to say they are able to stick their necks out more often. as from above we already know this isn't true. the charlatans are obviously better than either of those trash bands. > As for Nirvana, Bleach is brilliant. I'm in the habit of making digests out of non-digest mailing lists, and have been doing one from this one as well since I subscribed (on the 7th of november). So far there are two completed digests (char-101.txt and char-102.txt, about 40-50k each) and two more to follow this weekend. I've found it a lot easier to find things in digests myself, and that's my reason for doing them as well, plus, it saves me a lot of space, deleting most of the headers (the things that aren't important anyway) and the 5-10 line .signatures and making a short index at the beginning of each digest. If anyone wants copies of the digests, let me know and I'll send them right over. I'll probably add them to my homepage somewhere one day, but I never planned to, so you'll never know. :) //Erik (chief@lysator.liu.se) ---------------------- Date: Tue, 05 Dec 1995 00:26:43 -0400 (EDT) From: niconstandis@vaxsar.vassar.edu (nicole constandis) Subject: Re: Verve >On Mon, 4 Dec 1995, Greg Ipp wrote: > >> closest thing left to the verve (imho) since the breakup. > >Hey! >Verve is back together again (alas without one of their guitarists >and with three additional new members). You should definitely try and listen to Gorkys Zycotic Mynci although you might have difficulty getting hold of their stuff outside of the UK. They're kind of an alternative pop group from Wales (Cymru am byth!!!) and quite a lot of their stuff is in the Welsh language. Their lead singer and main source of inspiration is the wonderfully named Euros Childs and although they've played at a few large festivals (Glastonbury, Reading) its rare to see them outside of Wales. They're really annoying as they've got the potential to be absolutely massive but seem to be happier playing small gigs to delirious audiences. Their current album is 'Bwyd Time' and has more English language songs on it than any of their previous three albums. Hope some of this info. is useful or interesting to someone at least. Nirvana's lyrics were angry, so why not shout them out? Ever listen to John Lennon's _Plastic Ono Band_ album? No? Give it a try. He sings the song in a raging matter when it is needed. Pearl Jam release Vitology *much* earlier than Geffen wanted because it was less than a year since Versus. Record exec, these days, like to have almost two years between albums. This isn't the sixties. I guess you're gonna compare the Beatles to Pearl Jam, are ya? I agree, but I have a non-Charlatans question for the group. Sorry about this Justin, but I'm curious. What I want to know is what else you all listen to. Now, I know there was just a thread about that, but hear me out. It was unsurprising that everybody mentioned mostly Brit pop bands, or bands along those lines. I like that too, don't get me wrong. What I'm wondering is, outside of that, what do like to put in the stereo? I can't imagine that that's all anybody here listens to. There's gotta be some diverse musical tastes here. I think diversity is okay as long as it's in the same region and I think someone needs to set some boundries otherwise we will turn into the indie-mail list (which is *RUBBISH*). I think endless lists of top top bands falls out of the boundries myself but some people may like that kind of thing so we may need some sort of consensus. Otherwise the discussions have been okay so far. One last thing - How do you reply to a person personally when they haven't sig'ed thier mail address, if I reply it goes to the mail list as thet's the from address.
