They are playing soon (in stockholm) and I am interested... No it's neither Tibetan nose flutes, nor Mongolian throat singing. It's simply a pretty good indie pop trio fronted by a woman. They were OK in Hultsfred last year, but should probably be even better at Studion. I think Pixies is a pretty good reference. BTW, they used to be called God Damn Carnival. Anyone going to Band Of Susans next Wednesday? What a clash that night anyway... BOS at Studion, Gene at Gino, and Brainpool (yuck!!) at Gröna Lund. -------------------- Date: Fri, 12 May 95 12:00:10 BST From: M Hook Subject: Whale Hi! picked up the Whale EP yesterday and it is way cool! Whale and Teddybears started their tour yesterday here in Linkoping and the place was packed to the limit (400+ in a 350 max place). Outside we met Peter Siepen (sp?) from Z-Tv and talked with him a bit - he was just there with three friends (sorry, I don't remember their names) because he's one of Henrik Schyffert's friends and just had to see the premiere (he later got some help from me trying to get up to "surf" on the audience, but failed unfortunately :) only to promise to stage dive during Teddybears act (which he didn't)) - Anders Nunstedt from Expressen moved around in there as well as most of the swedish "indie music" journalist core and a few dozen members of different bands. When we were hanging in our jackets, Gordon Cyrus (the rumor in Aftonbladet that he wouldn't be there was false) and another band member (I don't know his name) came up and told us it was only 15 minutes before they were supposed to go on stage, and that they wanted a bathroom _now_, so we grabbed the opportunity and asked them a quick question about their rumored WWW Home Page. I got the address, but lost it later during the concert unfortunately (anyone have it on the list?). Well, I've been to Biohazard concerts twice in my life, Dog Eat Dog once and those have been _tough_ - but nothing compared to Whale. Really. And never a pit as warm as this one either. I must have lost 2 kilos at least during their 8 song set. I give it 5 (out of 5) points. A wonder. They will surely grab a lot of Curve fans with this performance and music by the way. No doubt about that. Well, I'll type in a concert review that Anders Nunstedt wrote (he gave the concert 4 points out of 5) tomorrow so I won't babble more about it. Only a tip for the rest on this list who are seeing them on their tour - Rumor said that about 20 seconds before the last song ends, Henrik Schyffert would drop his guitar and stage dive right into the audience and then leave. Which of course he did. :) I caught his hand and helped to drag him up from the floor (fame fame, yes you can have my autograph now :)), so keep an eye open when the 8th song starts. From what I saw, only Teddybears t-shirts and caps were sold + other miscellaneous t-shirts with "With..." on the front in a circle. Maybe those were the Whale t-shirts? I don't know. Anyway, I think they'd better make Teddybears the support act and not the other way around, because the Teddybears set really made the whole crowd want more adrenaline than they could give. They made an okay gig though, finishing off with their cover of Prince's "Purple Rain". About as tough as a Biohazard concert. If they're in _your_ town soon - DON'T MISS IT! I'd like to call their music "distorted guitar pop" more than plainly "indie pop". I get that Brainpool feeling when I hear that. :) Missed them in Hultsfred last year though (bummer!), but when they played here three months ago, they were better than great. :) I give my highest recommendations (whatever that might say :)). You won't be disappointed. And now when Salt's the topic: They recently got signed to Island Records, who will handle the international distribution and the works. They're spreading Salt over Europe this autumn and over the U.S. next spring. And now when Salt's the topic (again): I noticed I haven't posted the interview to the list, neither have I put it up on the Scan-Indie Web pages! I'll take time to do that tomorrow. //Erik ---------------------- Date: Mon, 15 May 1995 04:08:01 +0200 From: Erik S|derstr|m Subject: re: Emmaboda & Naked On Fri, 12 May 95, John Boqvist wrote: >Emmaboda will be THE pop-in this summer. >If I should choose one fetival (festival? wrong word!) it would be Emmaboda. > >A gathering in a clearing for the ones who think popmusic is worth it. >Pure fun. What's the reason this time? > Does anyone have the correct information? Not me, sorry. All I know is that you shouldn't trust the newspapers' giglists too much. The best way to find out is making a phonecall to the place of the gig, or to whomever is responsible. Martin. ---------------------- Date: Tue, 16 May 95 16:42:14 +0200 From: Marten.Sahlen@eua.ericsson.se (Marten Sahlen) Subject: Weezer + Salt To the guy asking about Weezer: radio Bandit here in Stockholm just reported that they'll play at Gino on July 9th. Believe it if you want... BTW, right at this very moment radio Bandit is playing Salt's first single from the Ausculate album. It's really great, a little Pixieish as I said before. For those (Mark??) going to Studion on Thursday to see Salt, let me just report that it has been confirmed that Cinnamon will open up. So talk about "Evening Of the Spices" :) Apparently Cinnamon sent a demo to some US record labels, one of which (don't remember which one) fired on all cylinders, and are promptly sending a rep over to Sweden. So they had to get a gig *fast* to show off, and opening up for Salt was the fastest they could get, even though they opened for This Perfect Day at the same very place last week. ---------------------- Date: Tue, 16 May 1995 21:20:29 +0300 (EET DST) From: trkisa@uta.fi (Kimmo Saaskilahti) Subject: Re: Liimanarina According to Petter Tiilikainen: * Guess if my eyes popped out when I saw Liimanarina "Supermarket" * in the catalog of Drag City records. Yep, that finnish band is * on the same label as indie rock stars such as Palace, Smog, * Silver Jews and Pavement... That's right!! The album (which is actually called 'Spermarket' or 'S#permarket') was released something like a month ago or so. I bought it the other day and I've been meaning to write a review for this list, but I haven't been able to listen through it yet - it is perhaps the most demanding piece of music I've heard since...well I don't know what!! For those who have not been following their 'career', they are a great lo-fi, or rather no-fi band from my hometown Tampere. Instead of cranking up electric guitars and fuzzboxes, they use mostly acoustic guitar, and the usual bass, drums and screaming vocals. Also, the very original lyrics by Olli Pauke, the main man of the band, are worth mentioning. For some reason they remind me of Bob Dylan's most surrealistic stuff, but with a very perverse twist, dealing with pornography, Elvis, Donald Duck, recorders (the wooden flute, not the tape deck) and what not. This time they have even been translated in English for foreigners' reading pleasure. Before this album they released three 7" EP's on Bad Vugum label: "Maailman tylsin vittumaisuus", "Juutalaiset" and "L{ntinen Pornokatu 12 & 35" (another Dylan reference...) So, if you're into perhaps a bit more challenging sounds than our average indie pop, give this band a listen. Well, what's so surprising about it?:) Liimanarina are a classic and the Drag City people can obviously appreciate talent when they hear some... I heartily recommend everyone with a soft spot for some real fucked up music to check the album out! (It's actually *"Spermarket"*, BTW.)
