Excerpt from MARKHAM GROCERY STORES FLEECED BY THIEVES, markham economist & sun
             June 12, 1996

Several Markham food stores were taken in by an apparent traveller's
 cheque scam last week.
York Regional police said two of the men shopped at a variety of food
shops in Markham last Wednesday and Thursday and paid for their groceries with
 American express Traveller's Cheques.
The Cheques had a face value of 200 Frence Francs, and the men told the
cashiers the cheques were worth $200 Canadian.
According to police, the actual value of the cheques is $50 Canadian.
However the men bought between $15 and $30 in goods, and recieved cash back as
if the cheques were worth $200.
Shop keepers are warned to be on the look out for the men, and to
recieve proper identification when accepting unfamiliar traveller's cheques.
