----------------------
 1. SUPPORTED NETWORKS
----------------------
Lotus SmartSuite 96 supports the following networks:

Artisoft LanTastic versions 5.0 and 6.0 (* see note below)
Banyan VINES versions 5.5x and 6.0
   DEC(TM) PATHWORKS(TM) version 5.0
IBM LAN Server versions 3.0 and 4.0

 * 32-bit network drivers (Windows 95/Windows NT) were not available
for testing at the time of this product's release.

-----------------------------------------------------
 2. WHY USE A SMARTSUITE 96 APPLICATION ON A NETWORK?
-----------------------------------------------------
The benefits of using a SmartSuite 96 application on a network include:

   * Conserving hard-disk space by having only one copy of the
SmartSuite 96 application on the file server instead of having
a copy on each personal computer

   * Allowing users to share files, computer equipment, printers,
backup devices, and other networked resources

   * The ability to quickly distribute files, templates, and
applications while users access files immediately

   * The ability to back up files centrally

   * Saving time when upgrading to new releases of SmartSuite
applications, because you upgrade the software on the file server
     instead of on individual computers

--------------------------------------------
 3. STEPS TO COMPLETE A NETWORK INSTALLATION
--------------------------------------------
You must complete the following steps to install a SmartSuite 96
application on a file server:

  1. When upgrading from a previous release of a SmartSuite 96
application, copy files that you want to save to another
directory before erasing the program files from your server.

  2. Determine the location and names of the server directories.

  3. Use the Install program to install the SmartSuite 96
     application on the server.

Before you run Install, map all node users to the product and
     shared tools directories.

  4. Create any personal or shared data directories on the file server.

  5. Make printers and network directories available to users.

  6. (Optional) Create a batch file, or update the system or user
login script, to connect users to network directories.

  7. Give users the information listed in section 13, "Information to
     Give Users," of this document.

-----------------------------------------------------
 4. DESIGNING A DIRECTORY STRUCTURE FOR SMARTSUITE 96
-----------------------------------------------------
There are several required and optional directories that you and
Install create. Before you install SmartSuite 96, decide where you
want to put the directories. Lotus recommends that you use the
directory structure shown here:

   Main Lotus directory (\LOTUS)
   Lotus Shared Components directory (\LOTUS\COMPNENT)
(for Word Pro, Approach, and Freelance Graphics)
   Lotus Shared Components directory (LOTUS\LOTUSAPP)
     (for 1-2-3 and Organizer)
   Program directory for 1-2-3 Release 5 (\LOTUS\123)
Program directory for Word Pro 96 (\LOTUS\WORDPRO)
Program directory for Approach 96 (\LOTUS\APPROACH)
Program directory for Freelance Graphics 96 (\LOTUS\FLG)
Program directory for Organizer 2.1 (\LOTUS\ORGANIZE)
Program directory for SmartCenter 96 (\LOTUS\SMARTCTR)
Program directory for ScreenCam 2.1 (\LOTUS\SCRNCAM)
   Program Directory for DocOnline (\LOTUS\ACROREAD)

-----------------------------------
 5. HOW TO INSTALL ON A FILE SERVER
-----------------------------------
To run a File Server Install:

   1. Insert Disk 1 or the CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.

   2. (Windows 95) Choose Start - Run.
(Windows NT 3.51) Choose File - Run from the Program Manager.

   3. Enter X:\INSTALL in the Run dialog box, where X: is your disk
       drive or CD-ROM drive.

Install consists of a series of dialog boxes that are generally
self-explanatory. If you need more information when using a
dialog box, choose Help by clicking Help or pressing ALT+H.

   4. Select "Install on a file server" at the bottom of the Welcome
       to Install dialog box.

Note that if you run a Distribution Install to the file server, you
can run subsequent Standard and File Server Installs from
the Distribution Install.

When running Install:

   * Use the Node User Feature Access dialog box to specify whether
node users can copy any product features to their personal
directory. (The features are available to node users
whether they can copy them or not.) These are optional
settings that will help save disk space on your node
installations. Choose Customize on the Install Options
dialog box to get to the Node User Feature Access dialog box.

   * After you install a SmartSuite 96 application on the file server,
you must run a Node Install before you can run the application.

   * Before you run Install, map all node users to the product and
     shared components directories.

------------------------------------
 6. HOW TO INSTALL ON A NETWORK NODE
------------------------------------
Once you install SmartSuite 96 on a file server, the Node Install
program resides on that server. To install a SmartSuite 96
application on a node, you must run a Node Install.

NOTE: If you want to run a SmartSuite 96 application from the file
server rather than from a node, you must complete the Node Install on
the file server.

To run a Node Install:

   1. (Windows 95) Choose Start - Run.
(Windows NT 3.51) Choose File - Run from the Program Manager.

   2. Type X:\<path>\INSTALL in the Run dialog box, where X:\<path>
is the drive letter and path for the SmartSuite 96 application
      on your file server.

   3. Choose OK.

NOTE: Before you run Install, map all node users to the product and
shared components directories.

---------------------------------
 7. CREATING PERSONAL DIRECTORIES
---------------------------------
Users who run a SmartSuite 96 application from a file server must have
a personal directory.

NOTE: Each SmartSuite 96 application requires a separate personal
directory.

This directory can reside on either the file server or a node, and
contains the application configuration files. If you selected
features during the File Server Install that node users could copy,
the personal directory contains these also. Users can also store data
or other files in their personal directories.

When deciding where to locate personal directories, determine if the
file server or node has enough disk space for personal directories.
The file server may be the more convenient location for personal
directories if you are responsible for regularly backing up and
archiving data files.

If you decide to put personal directories on nodes, let users create
the directories because they are familiar with the directory structure
of their hard disks. During installation on a node, Install prompts
users for the name and location of their personal directory, and
creates the directory if it does not already exist.

If you decide to put personal directories on the file server, create
the directories yourself, because you must assign network names and
access privileges to those directories.

------------------------------------
 8. CREATING SHARED DATA DIRECTORIES
------------------------------------
Shared data directories contain data files users create. One copy of
a shared data file may serve many users. Shared data directories can
have any name, can be in any location on the file server, and must be
available to node users.

After you install SmartSuite 96 application(s) on the file server,
make the server directories available to network users. The procedure
differs for each network. However, you generally need to give users
read-only access to directories in which you don't want them to write
over, delete, or create files; and give each user full access to a
personal directory. Additionally, if applicable for your network,
make directories shareable by giving the directory location on the
server a network name (share name).

--------------------
9. AUTOMATED INSTALL
--------------------
Automated Install is a feature that allows users to run the Install
program without the user interface. This feature is particularly
useful for network administrators who must manage product installations
and upgrades for large groups of users.

You use this feature by filling in the fields in the response file
(INSTSUIT.RSP) and then making that file available to users.
The information you supply in this file provides input to the Install
program so it can run without user intervention.

NOTE: Only network administrators should edit the response file.
Individual users should use the response file provided to them by
their network administrator.

To use the Automated Install feature, first prepare the response file:

   1. Back up the response file by making a copy with a new name
      (INSTSUIT.SAV, for example).

   2. In the original response file, provide the information for each
field. Examine each default value to make sure it is the value
you want. Read the comments for each field for information
about legal values and possible interactions with other fields.

   3. Validate your response file by running a test Install that uses
the response file. (See the command line information below.)
The Install program displays any errors that occur. Remember
that if you are testing Node Installs, you must run a File
      Server Install first.

When your response file has no errors and performs the installation as
you intend, make it available to your users with instructions about how
to run the Install program. You might want to tell them what command
line to type, or you might choose a different method. The best
distribution strategy depends on the tools available at your site.

To run Automated Install:

   1. (Windows 95) Choose Start - Run.
(Windows NT 3.51) Choose File - Run from the Program Manager.

   2. Type the Install command:

	<path>\install /A <ResponseFilePath> [/U ["UserName"]]
      [/O [<LogFilePath>]] [/?]

       where:

        * path is the location of INSTALL.EXE.

        * /A activates the Automated Install feature.

        * ResponseFilePath is the location of the response file.
Always specify the full path to this file.

        * /U allows you to specify the name of the user.

        * "UserName" is the name of the user to which this copy of
the program is registered. See the comments for the UserName
field below for information about defaults.

        * /O turns on status logging.

        * LogFilePath is the full path and name of the status log
file. If you do not specify a path, this defaults to
LOTINST.LOG in the directory where Windows was installed.

        * /? brings up the command line usage message.

Hints and Tips:

   * Do not change the field names to the left of the equal signs (=)
in the response file. Changing the field names will cause errors.

   * Do not remove fields from the response file. Removing fields will
     cause errors.

-------------
10. UNINSTALL
-------------
The Uninstall program allows you to remove all files associated with a
selected Lotus application that were copied to your system when the
application was installed. It also removes all program folders or
groups, shortcut icons, icons, and Windows registry entries.

NOTE: You cannot use Uninstall to remove a files copied to a file server
during a Server Install of Smart Suite 96. You can run Uninstall only
for a Standard or Node Install of SmartSuite 96.

In SmartSuite 96, you can use the Uninstall feature to uninstall
SmartCenter 96, Word Pro 96, Approach 96, and Freelance Graphics 96.
You cannot use Uninstall to remove ScreenCam 2.1, DocOnline, Organizer
2.1, or 1-2-3 Release 5. In addition, you cannot use Uninstall to
remove files added when you installed a second or subsequent language.

Uninstall displays messages and prompts you before it removes any user-
modified file, so you can decide whether to remove the file. You can
rerun Uninstall until all files associated with the application are
removed.

Uninstall also creates an output log and displays error messages, so
you can track and review the entire process. Uninstall overwrites the
output log each time it is run, so you may want to rename this file if
you want to save it.

Uninstall does not delete files in your work or personal directories,
or other files that were changed since they were installed. It will
not delete a directory until all directories and files are removed
from that directory. In addition, Uninstall will not remove files
copied to a file server during a File Server Install.

Uninstall displays a prompt before it removes many files, in case you
do not want to remove a specific file. If you decide not to remove a
file and the product is not removed completely, then Uninstall will
also leave the files it needs to run again, including the product .INF
and CINSTALL.INI files. If you want to run Uninstall again, do not
remove these files manually.

In addition, Uninstall will not remove files needed by another Lotus
product. Be careful not to remove these shared files manually, or
other Lotus applications will not run correctly. Uninstall will
remove these files when it removes the last Lotus application.

How to Invoke Uninstall
-----------------------
Uninstall is available to users from the Start menu (Windows 95) or
the Program Manager (Windows NT 3.51).

Windows 95 users can run Uninstall by completing these steps:

   1. Choose Start - Settings - Control Panel.
   2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
   3. Select the program to be removed.
   4. Click Remove.

Windows NT 3.51 users can invoke Uninstall by clicking the Uninstall
icon for the product to be removed.

As a network administrator, you can provide node users with an automated
Uninstall function by using a command line argument with the Uninstall
program:

   LUNIN10 /T <ProductName> /V <ProductVersion> /I <INF_file_path>
   /C <CINSTALL.INI_file_path> [/A] [/O [<LogFilePath>]]
   [/L <LanguageCode>] [/U <UserName>]

      where:

        * /T <ProductName> is the product name, exactly as found in
          the Registry.

        * /V <ProductVersion> is the product version, exactly as found
          in the Registry.

        * /I <INF_file_path> is the complete path and name of the
file that lists the product files. This file always has an
          .INF extension.

        * /C <CINSTALL.INI_file_path> is the complete path and name of
          the install configuration file, CINSTALL.INI.

        * [/A] causes an automated Uninstall.

        * [/O [<LogFilePath>]]] specifies the name and location of the
message log file Uninstall creates. This file will include
a record of each item removed and any error messages
encountered. If you omit this parameter, it defaults
to LOTUNIN.LOG in the Windows directory.

        * [/L <LanguageCode>] specifies the language in which
Uninstall will run. If you omit this parameter, Uninstall
defaults to English. Valid codes are the 2-character ISO
standard language codes. You can enter any language code
here, as long as you have installed the product in that
          language on this system.

        * [/U <UserName>] specifies the user name to place in the
Uninstall log file. This parameter is for informational
purposes only. If you omit this parameter, Uninstall
          defaults to the current user.

-----------------------------
11. MULTILINGUAL INSTALLATION
-----------------------------

You can install copies of SmartSuite 96 in multiple languages. This
capability is part of the Lotus strategy for multilingual computing.

NOTE: SmartCenter 96, Word Pro 96, Freelance Graphics 96, and Approach
96 support this strategy of multilingual computing. You can run these
applications in different languages at the same time. ScreenCam 2.1,
DocOnline, Organizer 2.1, and 1-2-3 Release 5 do not support this
feature. You can run these applications only in the language that
was last installed.

If you want to install SmartSuite 96 in more than one language, Lotus
recommends that you install all of the SmartSuite 96 applications
first. The first language you install becomes the default language.
Then you can choose which applications to install in subsequent
languages.

To add an additional language version of SmartCenter 96, Word Pro 96,
Freelance Graphics 96, or Approach 96, you must run SmartSuite Install
again. The Install program informs you that you already have a copy
of the application in a different language, and preserves the
directory structure of the default language. Lotus recommends that
you do not change this default directory.

Remember to deselect ScreenCam 2.1, DocOnline, Organizer 2.1, and
1-2-3 Release 5 before you begin to copy files in the secondary
language, unless you want to overwrite these applications with the
secondary language.

When you install different language versions of SmartCenter, SuiteStart
will only launch the default language.

If you installed a node version of SmartSuite 96 or one of its
applications, you can click the Install icon for the language you
want to install next.

As you add additional language versions of SmartSuite 96, the Install
program populates the Start menu with icons for the additional
languages. For example, the icon for the German version of Word Pro
96 is labeled "Lotus Word Pro - Deutsch."

Performing a Server Install from CD or Disk
-------------------------------------------
The first language installed on the server will be the primary
language on the server. Additional languages installed on the server
become secondary languages on the server. The first language a node
user chooses to install from the server becomes the primary language
on the node, regardless of its status on the server. Additional
languages the node user chooses to install become secondary languages
on the node.

To install an additional language from a multilanguage CD:

   1. Install a copy of SmartSuite 96 on the server.

   2. Run the Install program from the CD again.

   3. Choose the additional language you want to install.

   4. To install the additional language as part of the copy of
SmartSuite 96 you already installed, choose the same
drives and directories you chose the first time.

To install the additional language as a separate copy of
SmartSuite 96, choose different drives and/or directories.

   5. Inform your node users where they can find the icon for
the language(s) they want to install.

To install an additional language from disk:

   1. Install a copy of SmartSuite 96 on the server.

   2. Obtain the disk set for the additional language you want
      to install.

   3. To install the additional language as part of the copy of
SmartSuite 96 you already installed, choose the same drives
and directories you chose the first time.

To install the additional language as a separate copy of
SmartSuite 96, choose different drives and/or directories.

   5. Inform your node users where they can find the icon for the
      language(s) they want to install.

----------------------------------------------------
12. INSTALLING ORGANIZER 2.1 GROUP SCHEDULING AGENTS
----------------------------------------------------
To use group scheduling, send in the Lotus Organizer Group Scheduling
Invitation Card found in your SmartSuite 96 package. Before
installing Organizer 2.1 with group scheduling on a local area
network, you need to review the Organizer Administrator's Guide.

If you are installing from disk, you will receive the Organizer
Administrator's Guide and the Agent Disks when you send in the Lotus
Organizer Group Scheduling Invitation Card. If you are installing
from CD-ROM, the Organizer Administrator's Guide is included as part
of the SmartSuite DocOnline. The Agent software is available on the
SmartSuite CD-ROM in the \WINAGENT and \OS2AGENT directories.

The Lotus Organizer Release 2.1 Administrator's Guide is intended for
administrators who use Organizer mail-based or single-server
scheduling. It is not intended for Organizer Personal Information
Manager (PIM) users.

If you are installing the agent software from disk, use the
INSTALL.EXE file located on the Agent Disk for your operating system.
If you are installing from the SmartSuite CD-ROM, use INSTALL.EXE
located in the \WINAGENT directory (if you use Windows 95) or in the
\OS2AGENT directory (if you use OS/2).

NDEPLOY.WRI and CDEPLOY.WRI are Windows 95 Write files that answer
common deployment questions for administrators who use Organizer group
scheduling with Lotus Notes or cc:Mail, respectively. The files are
not intended for administrators who use Organizer 2.1 for
single-server scheduling, or who do not use group scheduling. The
files are located in the \LOTUS\ORGANIZE\ADMIN directory after
installation from SmartSuite.

TECHNOTE.OR2 provides information for Organizer Release 2.1
administrators and advanced users. The file is located in
the \LOTUS\WORK\ORGANIZE directory after installation from SmartSuite.
