BootXS Version 2.20 DEMO November 27th 1994 written by Christer Gustavsson Stainless Software ½ 1993,1994 Why BootXS? When I a while ago finally bought a hard disk for my computer, I started to set up DA's and autoloading programs in a way I hadn't done before. After a while I realised that it wasn't very smart to have all the accessories in the root. A program called Accessory solved this problem by reading all the DA's from a folder. Very neat! As there was more and more DA's and autoloading programs on my hd, I realised I needed some kind of program to easy setup what should be loaded at boot time. I tested a few "Accessory selectors", but they were very bad, or couldn't read DA's from a folder. Therefore I decided to make a Gem-based program to do the work: BootXS was born. What it does. BootXS simply helps you select what should be loaded at boot time. This version handles DA's, CPX's, autoloading programs, desktop.inf / newdesk.inf files, assign.sys files, MiNT configuration files (mint.cnf), GEM configuration files (gem.cnf), MiNT filesystems (.xfs) and MiNT device drivers (.xdd). It's completely Gem-based, and very easy to use. This is why I don't describe how to use it in this text. Compatibility. BootXS/AutoXS has shown to work very well on my Falcon 4/120, and should work on most systems. It has also been tested on an 1040 STFM with no problems at all. BootXS also works under MultiTos (it would be a shame if it didn't!), but AutoXS won't show no mercy to MTos. It isn't supposed to do that, however: It's supposed to run as the first program in the auto folder, before everything else! Installing. Installing BootXS is very easy: Just copy it wherever you may want it to be. AutoXS can be harder, though. It is supposed to run first in the auto folder. If you don't have a program to rearrange the order of the programs in the auto folder, just move all the programs in the auto folder to another folder, copy AutoXS into the auto folder and move all the programs back again. AutoXS will now be the first program in the folder! BootXS tries to read and write it's info file from your boot drive, so if you write protect your boot drive changes you make to your boot setups will be lost! What's new? - Version 1.00. September 11th 1993. Everything! The very first version of BootXS! Let's you choose which of all your DA's, CPX's and bootprograms to be active after boot. - Version 2.00. April 9th 1994. Now uses bootsetups, so that you can choose your favourite setup fast and easy! AutoXS included to select setup at boot time. - Version 2.10. September 1st 1994. Gem interface reworked, so that every window fits into ST low resolution! Support for assign.sys and newdesk.inf / desktop.inf files added. - Version 2.20. November 27th 1994. Previous versions of AutoXS didn't always identify which setup that was the current one. This bug is now fixed. Under some circumstances the filecopying under MiNT failed. This has also been fixed. Support added for MiNT configuration files, GEM configuration files, MiNT filesystems and MiNT device drivers. Coming Versions. What's planned for the future? - Reordering of loading order of DA's, CPX's and autoloading programs etc. - Support of autoloading Gem-programs. - Setup of extensions: Which program should be executed when clicking on a .dum-file?
