Edith Manual File Options 19th May 1994 The following FILE OPTIONS can be specified in this dialog: The TYPE of NEWLINES when a file is saved can be set to match any of the following three standards: MS-DOS (carriage return, line feed) UNIX (line feed) Macintosh (carriage return) BACKUPs can be written before saving a file. The backup file either has the same name as the original file, with the extension '.BAK', or is saved in a folder BACKUP by its original name. CARBON COPIES of a file can be saved at regular intervals, set in minutes, and can be saved when you choose to abandon the contents of a window when you close it. Carbon copies are a safety measure. When for some reason your computer system has crashed while you were editing important text, and a carbon copy of that text has been written recently, and the text is opened again, EDITH will automatically offer to use the carbon copy instead of the original file. Also, when you decided to abandon a text and later found the changes valuable anyway, the carbon copy can provide a solution. The TIME the LID of the TRASH CAN takes to close can be set in seconds. When the automatic trash can system is switched on (in the EDITOR OPTIONS dialog), old text blocks are automatically saved to the trash can. While the lid is open, moving data to the trash can takes less time than when it is closed. The difference is especially noticeable when quickly deleting lines by repeatedly pressing F8 or ^Y. The INTERVAL at which the CLIPBOARD is sensed can be set in 10ths of a second. ** When the clipboard is only sensed once every 5 seconds, the delay before Edith notices an external change can be irritating. It is good to know that even while the menu item PASTE is still greyed out, the keyboard shortcut ^V will force Edith to read the clipboard immediately. Edith Manual File Options 19th May 1994
