Edith Manual         File Selector        15th May 1994


The built-in custom Edith file selector provides access
to most Edith functions, and offers keyboard  shortcuts
for selecting files.

As it has a DIALOG FIXER next to the OK button, it  can
remain open during text editing.  Clicking OK will only
cause the  window  to  be  closed  when  the  fixer  is
selected.

When  Edith  is  running   under  MultiTOS  or  as   an
accessory, the  file  selector  serves  as  a  complete
replacement  for   desktop   and   menu   bar.    Under
MultiTOS, it will always remain open (but usually as an
ICON).


** If you  feel more  familiar with  the old  TOS  file
   selector,  disable the Edith file selector in the
   WINDOW OPTIONS dialog (^1).


HINTS

   ù When OPENING  files, an arbitrary  number of  file
     names can  be typed  in the  `Selection' field, as
     well as other run-time command line options.

   ù Typing a wildcard pattern sets the file mask
   
   ù Clicking on the  `current folder' pops  up a  menu
     for quick access to other directories.
     
   ù The TAB key completes a file name.



MENUS

The file selector has  an EDITH and  a FILE menu.   The
entries in the FILE menu  are available when a file  is
selected in the  file selector.  The  EDITH menu  gives
access to  the OPTIONS, WINDOWS  and CONFIG  menus, and
offers alternatives for the  entries of the FILE  menu.
The EDITH menu is especially useful when EDITH is  used
as an accessory  or with  MultiTOS,  when  there is  no
desktop menu bar.




PROJECT FILES and COMMAND LINES

EDITH recognises two sets of command line options.  One
set is only  recognised when the  editress is  started;
those can be found in  the printed manual.  The  second
set is also recognised  when Edith is already  running.
There are three ways of passing a command line to Edith
when the editress is already running.

   ù  When OPENING texts, a  full command  line can  be
      typed into the file selector instead of a  single
      file name.

   ù  When the editress is used under MultiTOS or as  a
      desk   accessory   under   Gemini, the    program
      EDITH.TTP passes  its  parameters to  Edith,   so
      that you can give editor commands from your shell
      window.

   ù  A PROJECT  FILE is  a file  containing a  command
      line.  It  can be  opened through  the file  menu
      (open project, 
^M).

While EDITH can open only 6  texts at a time,  you  are
allowed to give a command line with more texts than can
be immediately  processed.  Edith  will offer  you  the
possibility to QUEUE the remaining texts.  Queued texts
can be  opened by  selecting OPEN  NEXT (
^O) from  the
FILE menu.  When all windows are closed,  and there are
still queued texts left,  Edith will issue a warning.


The RUN-TIME command line options are:

   -no{tepad}        Open the note pad

   -n{ext}           Open next file from queue

   -p{roject}        Open following  file  as  project;
                     rest of command  line is  ignored.
                     Also allowed  in  a  command  line
                     file.

   -i{conic}         Open following files as icons
   
   -b{inary}         Open following files as binaries
   
   -a{lternative}    Open    following     files     as
                     alternative text windows

   -d{efault}        Open following  files  as  default
                     text windows.

   -tr{ash}          Open trash window
   
   -cl{ipboard}      Open clipboard window
