FONT UTILITIES
				==============


	These three utilities are programs which I wrote to help
	with some of the problems I came across while using GEM
	fonts from a variety of sources.

	ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR FONT FILES BEFORE USING THESE UTILITIES
	WITH THEM.

	These programs and their source code are in the Public
	Domain.  You use them at your own risk.

	FONT_DIR
	--------
	This program displays or prints a list of font files with
	their font name, id number and first and last characters in
	the font, as well as the file size and date and time stamps.
	This is useful for checking that all the point sizes in a
	family really do have the same id number.


	USAGE:	FONT_DIR <path\>[template] [-P]

	EXAMPLES:

		FONT_DIR ATSS*.fnt
		Displays details of all Atari Swiss fonts in the
		current folder.

		FONT_DIR b:\gdos.sys\
		Displays details of all fonts in the B:\GDOS.SYS
		folder.


	FONT_NUM
	--------
	This program is for use when you need to change the font
	numbers of one or more files; for example because two
	different fonts from different suppliers have the same id.
	By allowing you to specify a file template with ? and *
	wildcards it is usually possible to renumber all the family
	at once.  You are asked to confirm  before each file is
	renumbered.

	USAGE:	FONT_NUM [path\]<template> <number>


	EXAMPLES:
		FONT_NUM b:\gdos.sys\atss*.fnt 3
		Changes the font number of Atari Swiss fonts in
		folder b:\gdos.sys\ to 3.

		FONT_NUM attp10*.fnt 100
		Changes the font number of Atari Typewriter 10 point
		font to 100.




			    = 1 =

	MREN
	----
	Not specifically a font utility; this program allows
	multiple re-naming of files, with normal GEMDOS wildcards in
	the input template and a more generalised output template
	format.  I use this to convert font file names between
	different naming styles, eg fonts as supplied by Atari
	compared with the fonts supplied with Font Kit Plus.

	USAGE:	MREN [path\]<template1> <template2> [A|D|R]

	OPTIONS:
		A:  Ask before renaming each file
		D:  Don't rename any files: just display what their
		    new names would be if they were renamed.This is
		    the default.
		R:  Rename all the files without asking.  Best to use
		    this only after testing with the D option first!

	<template1> is a normal GEMDOS file template which can
		    include the usual ? and * wildcards.

	<template2> describes how the new name will be constructed
		    from the old name for files which match
		    <template1>.

	Normal characters in template2 will go into the new file
	name at that position.

	?s copy the character at the corresponding position in
	<template1>.

	*s are expanded into ?s.

	~1 to ~8 copy the character from the 1st to 8th position in
	the old file name respectively.

	~A to ~B copy the character from the 1st to 3rd position in
	the old file type respectively.

	EXAMPLES:
		MREN b:\gdos.sys\atss*.fnt ~7~8????.fnt D
		This tests renaming files from the b:\gdos.sys\
		folder:
		atss10ep.fnt would become epss10.fnt
		atss12hi.fnt would become hiss12.fnt

		MREN b:\fonts\ep*.* x1*.*
		This tests renaming files from the b:\fonts\ folder:
		eptr14.fnt would become x1tr14.fnt
		epss08.fnx would become x1ss08.fnx

		MREN ??ct12.fnt jhct12~1~2.fnt A
		This prompts for renaming of files in the
		current folder:
		x1ct12.fnt can become jhct12x1.fnt
		h1ct12.fnt can become jhct12h1.fnt




			    = 2 =


		MREN *x1.fnt *ep.* R
		This renames files in the current folder without
		asking for confirmation:
		jhct12x1.fnt becomes jhct12ep.fnt



	NOTE: All three programs, and MREN in particular, can be
	awkward to run from the desktop because the command line
	required is sometimes too long for the TTP dialogue box.
	You can get around this be leaving out the file path
	provided that it is the current default.  There are two
	ways of arranging this.  The obvious way is to copy the
	font utilities into your GDOS.SYS folder (or wherever you
	keep your fonts) and run them from there.  However this is
	not always suitable and there is an alternative. Arrange
	the desktop so that the folder with your fonts is open and
	in the current topped window; and so that the required
	utility program is visible in another window.	Then
	double-click on the program with the left mouse button
	while at the same time holding the right mouse button down.
	This will start the program without needing to change the
	current top window.
