Microsoft Windows NT, Beta March 1993 Microsoft Windows 3.1 Migration Fix for "Run Minimize" Program Items The Microsoft Windows NT product group has recently identified a migration problem with the Beta March release of Windows NT. If you have installed the March Beta release and elected to migrate Windows groups that contain one or more program items which have "Run Minimized" selected, you may encounter a problem when typing a non-cursor keystroke in the Program Manager. If the error occurs, you will be unable to properly Logoff or Shutdown. Please give the system several minutes to allow the file systems to be properly flushed and power cycle the machine off then on. If you encounter this problem, please take the following steps to remedy this behavior. We appreciate our customers efforts in reporting problem areas and encourage you to continue working with us to improve the product. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. __________________________________________________________________________ To retrieve the corrected files from the WINNT CompuServe forum: Connect to the WINNT CompuServe forum, Library 2 where you will find WNT006.ZIP. This file was created using the PKZIP file compression utility. You will need the PKUNZIP utility to extract the files to a directory on your hard drive. PKUNZIP can be found as PKZ110.EXE in Library 2 of the IBMCOM forum. Download PKZ110.EXE and execute the file to extract the PKUNZIP.EXE utility. Create a directory on your hard disk where the extracted files can be placed. For example, C:\WNT006. To extract the WNT006.ZIP file, type: PKUNZIP WNT006.ZIP C:\WNT006 to decompress the files into the directory or directly to floppy disk. The following files can now be seen: ADVAPI32.DLL FIX31GRP.EXE README.TXT __________________________________________________________________________ Instructions to resolve the problem behavior: 1. Logon to Windows NT and immediately after logging on, insert the floppy patch disk into the floppy disk drive containing the above files. 2. Execute the MS-DOS Command Prompt from the Program Manager. Locate FIX31GRP.EXE on the floppy patch diskette and execute the program. For example at the command line type, A:FIX31GRP.EXE. This program is designed to detect affected program groups and properly reset the registry. 3. Logoff from Windows NT by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, and select Logoff, then OK. The system may appear to hang, at which point you may be prompted to "End Task". Select End Task. 4. Log back onto Windows NT and execute the MS-DOS Command Prompt again from the Program Manager. Locate ADVAPI32.DLL on your hard drive in the Windows NT system path. For example, CD \WIN31\SYSTEM32 or change directories to the appropriate system directory for your Windows NT installation. Rename this file at the command line by typing, RENAME ADVAPI32.DLL ADVAPI32.OLD. 5. With the floppy patch disk containing the updated ADVAPI32.DLL file in the floppy disk drive, copy this file to the appropriate Windows NT system path location of your Windows NT installation to replace the failing file. For example at the command line type, COPY A:ADVAPI32.DLL C:\WIN31\SYSTEM32. 6. Shutdown from Windows NT by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, and select Shutdown, then OK. You may now log back on and proceed as normal.
